A record shot of a Merlin, a small falcon, in a tree. It took me quite a while to see my first ever Merlin not seeing one until 2022 over sixteen years after I first got into birds and I have been lucky to see them most years and sometimes more than once in a year since but hadn't managed to get a photo. Last spring I had something similar with another species I'd wanted to see for ages when seeing my first ever Woodcocks then seeing them again a few weeks later getting a record shot in the latter sighting. I found it funny having these two species I'd aimed to see for years and had now seen which I was thrilled with but I photographed one sooner after seeing my first than the other. I like little patterns, connections and quirks like this. It did make me determined to try and get a photo of a Merlin if I saw any this year and I took some very poor record shots just to say I had when I saw my first of the year in January so it was nice to get this record shot today.

Yeah they’re so beautiful to see. I’ve not often seen them in the sun especially not that closely so it was great to appreciate the colours coming to life.
