Oh it’s the classic on the history of cryptology. My village library, bizarrely, had a copy and for several years I was the only borrower.

Then it was out of print for years and I hunted for a second hand copy before we had the web to help.

When it was reprinted I grabbed it quickly.

The Codebreakers by David Kahn.

Just being realistic. Although I can get obsessed with a puzzle there does come a point where interest wanes.

Anything up to World War One you can solve with pencil and paper. After that machine ciphers started coming in.

I’ve something about Kryptos in a book somewhere. I’ve never tried to decipher it myself.

I’m inclined to believe that Voynich is either a hoax or indecipherable.
