1. they are feeling down or not enjoying things, It's not just because of one thing that happened recently (like someone passing away). 2. These feelings are causing them problems at school, work or in not getting on with people. 3. It's been going on for weeks

Principles of Engagement for Partnerships in Mental Health Research

PROJECT INITIATION
Collaborate Early.
Partner early and involve patient and public involvement (PPI) members from the outset.

Develop Cost-Effective Funding Models.
Use daily rates for academics to align with industry pricing. Jointly apply for funding to reduce financial burden on SMEs.

AGREEMENTS
Standardise Contract Templates.
Avoid contracting delays by using standardised templates with pre-agreed terms (e.g. intellectual property (IP), confidentiality).

Streamline IP Negotiations.
Establish clear guidelines and agreements about ownership, licencing and commercialisation from the outset.

Appoint a Liaison.
Appoint a liaison familiar with both industry and academia to bridge gaps in communication, such as Health Innovation Networks, MindTech HRC, Knowledge Transfer Partnership fellows.

Ways of Working (WoW).
Schedule workshops to get to know each other’s work cultures, align expectations and understand the risk appetite.

PROJECT EXECUTION
Shared Digital Workspace.
Using Google Drive, Microsoft Teams or Trello allows for document sharing and feedback in real-time.

Co-created Project Charter and RACI Matrix.
Outline goals, timelines, deliverables and review them regularly. Create a responsibility assignment matrix (RACI) for each collaborator.

Dedicated Project Management Team.
Set up a team of academic and industry members to handle daily operations and track progress.

β€˜Think like a start-up, work like a university’.
Adopt agile project management with sprints and feedback loops. Ensure rigorous academic validation.

Meetings.
Schedule frequent, short, and focused meetings with relevant team members.

Celebrate Successes.
Acknowledge achievements and key milestones to motivate
the team.

FUTURE PROOFING
Fellowships, Internships, and Mentoring.
Support researchers to gain experience working with industry partners through internship programmes and mentoring.

4️⃣ Engagement with innovators:
We offer differing levels of support for innovators depending on their stage of development, from one-off advice and signposting, through to strategic partnerships where interests align.

3️⃣ Case studies:
We are also preparing overview case studies of innovations we have supported which are now in widespread NHS use.

2️⃣ Training materials:
We are preparing training materials that innovators and researchers can review, to support understanding of the development pathway. These will also aim to help innovators understand the language of research and what funders are looking for.

1️⃣ Events:
We regularly organise events for innovators, people with lived experience and others to network and learn from each other. Please see our website (mindtech.org.uk) for upcoming events.

NHS colleagues need long term technical support to enable implementation
People with lived experience need feedback after they have contributed, so they know their feedback was worthwhile.

17.06.2025 09:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

➑️ A number of needs:
Innovators need regulatory frameworks for real-world evidence and opportunities to meet up with other innovators, clinicians and people with lived experience.

17.06.2025 09:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

➑️ Discussions also identified evidence gaps:
A lack of real-world evidence for some of the most promising technologies, a lack of data on efficiency rather than just accuracy, as well as a lack of health economic evidence in the field as a whole.

17.06.2025 09:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

➑️ They had gaps in knowledge:
Knowing what the NHS would pay for and commission, knowing what care pathways looked like to be able to design something that would slot in seamlessly, knowing how procurement works, and knowing how to engage people with lived experience in the right way.

17.06.2025 09:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

➑️ Innovators needed access:
To people with lived experience to understand the conditions they were interested in developing technology for
To clinicians to better understand care pathways and the NHS at a local and national level
To funding and support to stay alive as a company
