It was wonderful to hear you speak about your work &, by doing so, give hope & motivation for me to continue my sputtering writing habits. Iโ€™ve loved reading The Murderbot Diaries & I look forward to digging into Witch King & Queen Demon. Your sharing at Powellโ€™s added a little more joy to my soul.๐Ÿ˜Š

I provided direct feedback during my Disney Plus cancellation that if the company and its affiliates decided to fight authoritarianism, Iโ€™d consider signing up again. Choosing where to spend (or not spend) your money is measured and noticed.

Fantastic! I doubt theyโ€™ll make it to the states this year and depending on how long itโ€™s been since the tour started until when I can see it, Iโ€™ll sometimes try to avoid show spoilers. Not this time though! The performance and setlist look great. Enjoy the show!๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿป

Iโ€™m curious about her actionable ideas for holding people accountable. What does she want to do to hold people accountable for what they are doing to America? Her answer(s) could be part of a map out of this mess. Thanks and youโ€™re doing great work!

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

The idea of "manifest destiny" became popular in the late 1880s to describe western expansion, but its origins were a lot more humble than that. Indeed, the phrase had been wrested so far out of its original context that it wasn't until the late 1920s that a University of Buffalo historian named Julius Pratt figured out where it had come from. "Manifest destiny" originated as part of an op-ed written in 1845 by ring-wing newspaper editor John L. O'Sullivan for the Democratic Review. O'Sullivan was not writing about America's destiny to take the West; instead, he was focused specifically on the annexation of Texas, arguing that it was the nation's destiny to take the contested territory away from Mexico. Far from being a "true prophet of U.S. expansion," O'Sullivan was just a two-bit hack who quickly lost his newspaper job and went on to work as a propagandist for the Confederacy before becoming a spiritualist who claimed he could speak with the dead. Though O'Sullivan died in obscurity, the phrase "manifest destiny" was taken up by public figures; it was used by politicians advocating for the annexation of Oregon and by the poet Walt Whitman, singing the praises of his expanding nation.

A lot of people are throwing the phrase "manifest destiny" around right now. It does not mean what they think it means. In my book "Stories Are Weapons," I talk about the guy who coined the term, and what he was all about. wwnorton.com/books/978039...
