Overworking isn’t just unhealthy/unfair; it creates a feedback loop for managers, validating that staffing and hours are adequate since work gets done. Often though management is aware, and that’s an even tougher problem which I wish I had a better answer for.

No one should feel pressured into working for free to keep up. Such a tough situation, and I imagine is probably common in care work. I’d start by talking to my colleagues to understand how they feel about the unpaid work and see if there’s a way to be direct with management collectively.
