From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

Lawyers, career goals, and the gender gap in political ambition Tiffany D. Barnes (Government, University of Texas, Austin) and Mirya R. Holman (Hobby School, University of Houston) Abstract: Lawyers play a central role in every political system in the United States. But as lawyers are overrepresented in political office, women lawyers are underrepresented. We argue that, for men, attending law school and seeking political office align with broader career goals and gendered socialization patterns. We use an original survey of undergraduate social science majors to show that agentic career goals, or interest in influence, prestige, and wealth, is associated with attending law school. Data from a panel study of lawyers demonstrates that agentic goals predict political ambition. Women lawyers are less politically ambitious; agentic goals mediate this relationship. Meta’s enforcement systems have also been easily defeated by predators who lightly modify problematic hashtags after the company bans more straightforward versions. And in other cases — incredibly — the company’s recommendation systems appear to be working directly on behalf of the pedophiles: On a Journal Instagram test account, Meta wouldn’t allow search results for the phrase “Child Links,” but the system suggested an alternative: “Child Pornography Links.” After Meta blocked that term following a query by the Journal, the system began recommending new phrases such as “child lingerie” and “childp links.”

After another disturbing report on CSAM on Meta’s platforms, it’s clear the company’s own algorithmic machinery is a big part of the problem.
