FDA Inspectors Again Find Dangerous Breakdowns at an Indian Factory Supplying Medications to U.S. Consumers The latest inspection comes 2 1/2 years after the agency allowed Sun Pharma to keep shipping some drugs to Americans even after banning the factory from the U.S. market because of quality problems.

NEW: The FDA found that Sun Pharma, which produces generic drugs for U.S. consumers, failed to investigate the source of bacteria found in test vials or promptly deal with damaged equipment that had caused drugs to be contaminated with metal particles.

If you grew up in a household with an evangelical right-wing parent, as I did, you already know that the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, like the reversal of Roe v. Wade, is the culmination of a 50-year project.

Pregnancy is a minefield when you're disabled Few OB-GYNs get disability trainingโ€”and their disabled patients are far likelier to die.

Disabled people are 11 times more likely to die during labor/in the postpartum period than non-disabled people. Better education and smashing ableism is how we get out of this horrible stat.

For the past year, Iโ€™ve been looking into the topic of disability and pregnancy for @motherjones.com ๐Ÿงต

Among the waste uncovered by ProPublica and @cbsnews.com: Texas reimbursed anti-abortion groups $14 each time they handed out donated goods or materials, regardless of cost.

Thus, handing out one pamphlet reaped the same payment as a pack of diapers.

The author writes defensively around the choice to keep her pregnancy with a fetus that would suffer chronic illness, but not around the choice to force a 1-year-old baby to donate bone marrow to her brother. That's....a tell, around how we treat children and medical agency.

The Plot to Effectively Ban Abortion Nationwide Is Unfolding Before Our Eyes Lawmakers and activists are working to shutter clinics and restrict access to abortion pills. The end result would be catastrophic.

The budget bill that passed the Senate Tuesday is a chilling reminder that abortion could be rendered inaccessible across vast swaths of the country where itโ€™s still legalโ€”not because Congress passed a prohibition, but because too many clinics shuttered.

Threat in Your Medicine Cabinet: The FDAโ€™s Gamble on Americaโ€™s Drugs A ProPublica investigation found that for more than a decade, the FDA gave substandard factories banned from the United States a special pass to keep sending drugs to an unsuspecting public.

In 2022, inspectors described a โ€œcascade of failureโ€ at one foreign factory.

The FDA barred it from shipping drugs to the U.S. โ€” then excused more than 20 drugs from the ban, despite risks to consumers.

This case presents an easy question: whether SB1โ€™s ban
on certain medications, applicable only if used in a manner
โ€œinconsistent with . . . sex,โ€ contains a sex classification.
Because sex determines access to the covered medications,
it clearly does. Yet the majority refuses to call a spade a
spade. Instead, it obfuscates a sex classification that is
plain on the face of this statute, all to avoid the mere possibility that a different court could strike down SB1, or categorical healthcare bans like it. The Courtโ€™s willingness to
do so here does irrevocable damage to the Equal Protection
Clause and invites legislatures to engage in discrimination
by hiding blatant sex classifications in plain sight. It also
authorizes, without second thought, untold harm to
transgender children and the parents and families who love
them. Because there is no constitutional justification for
that result, I dissent.

Sotomayor, dissenting, says the majority "does irrevocable damage" to the equal protection clause and "invites legislatures to engage in discrimination by hiding blatant sex classifications in plain sight." She fears the damage in Skrmetti will go well beyond gender-affirming care, and she's right.

Tennesseeโ€™s law expressly classifies on the basis of sex
and transgender status, so the Constitution and settled
precedent require the Court to subject it to intermediate
scrutiny. The majority contorts logic and precedent to say
otherwise, inexplicably declaring it must uphold Tennesseeโ€™s categorical ban on lifesaving medical treatment so
long as โ€œโ€˜any reasonably conceivable state of factsโ€™โ€ might
justify it. Ante, at 21. Thus, the majority subjects a law
that plainly discriminates on the basis of sex to mere rational-basis review. By retreating from meaningful judicial
review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons
transgender children and their families to political whims.
In sadness, I dissent.

Justice Sotomayor's dissent in Skrmetti (which she's now reading from the bench) is deeply pained, accusing her colleagues of abandoning "transgender children and their families to political whims" and badly damaging "bedrock" principles of equal protection. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...
