The world is seeing a realignment: international law and green energy on one side; real politik and fossil fuels on the other. Which one does Canada want to bet its chips on? Which one does it want to help build?

It's hard to help Americans left behind because so much of US identity is rooted in individualism. The average American conservative holds all three positions at once:

— Virtue signals about supporting US manufacturing
— Against raising the minimum wage
— Buys foreign imports because they're cheap

I can't help but see the parallel here with the fight over slavery in the United States. In 1850, there was an available future of capitalism in which slavery was maintained--one the South desperately wanted to bring about. Part of Canada today, too, is working to build an immoral future

The obvious solution to the Columbus Day discourse is that Americans should celebrate today as "Canadian Thanksgiving"

Any argument re what Canada should produce more of in the future needs to wrestle with what kind of future we'll be living in. Does Canada want to be an "energy superpower" in a petro-fueled climate apocalypse? Just as important, is that actually an option given direction pursued by Europe & China?
