I order picture books for my library and ditto - they change me all the time! Our Lake by Angie Kang. That Always Happens Sometimes by Kiley Frank. A thousand more.

My 12 year old still enjoys a bedtime story (and even gets pulled into a good picture book, thanks to his little sister). I'll keep going as long as they want!

Anecdotally, my kid's district started using these last year and reported that behavior incidents with phones were way down - they all had workarounds, per my kid, but weren't taking them out in class anymore. Not perfect, but helpful.

Oh, I haven't read those since I was a teen! Putting the first one on hold to read along.

I went on a deep-dive one day after shelving some and thinking "who the heck is EDWARD Marshall?"

I am SO late listening to this episode, but seeing it on your list inspired me to read the series to my 6yo, who thinks they're hilarious. I'm sure someone else has mentioned it, but Edward Marshall was James' pseudonym to get around a publishing contract!

We buy flat kraft bags from a local printer - same logo every year. Seasonal bookmarks printed locally, w/ library info on the back (similar cost to buying from a vendor). Incentives from Oriental Trading, Amazon, etc. - we spend most of our budget on giveaway books at sign-up.

Courtney exactly described how I learned things as a kid - the delightful project of jumping from one encyclopedia volume to the next, slow but fascinating research, and a dozen happy discoveries along the way. That pursuit is probably one of the reasons I became a librarian!

Depending on your library, you might be able to choose a 3 week checkout on future loans - Libby defaults to 2, but I can choose 1-3 at checkout!
