What makes a good place?
Overview
This questionnaire is asking about where you live in Edinburgh:
How would you score it?
What you like about it?
What would make it better?
It covers the key things that make a good place to live such as housing, local shops and services, healthcare, open space, play, community space, jobs and public
transport.
You can answer the questions as an individual or as a group.
You don’t have to answer all the questions or provide detailed answers.
It will take 10 minutes to complete
Why do we want to know?
We are starting to think about the plans for how Edinburgh develops and changes in the future.
We know that Edinburgh is not just one place, but it is made up of many different areas. Each area has its good points, bad points and challenges.
We will use the results of this questionnaire to get an understanding of each area and what we need to plan for: what needs to be protected and what might be needed.

My Favourite Bike Ride: #SpokesComp results

For many people, a favourite ride is a weekend cycle to and through places of great natural beauty or historic interest. But our entries showed that it can also be your daily commute, taking your mind off work; or a school bike bus with its amazing enthusiasm and hope for the future. Our lovely entrants showed just how much cycling can mean to people in so many different ways.

We were also delighted to get a good range of entries from the Lothians, with West and East Lothian entries winning 3rd and 4th positions.

Regular viewers of Lost in Livi will be familiar with my enthusiasm for the cycle maps produced by Spokes, the Lothians Cycle Campaign.

The launch of the 5th edition of the West Lothian map was hosted by the West Lothian Bike Library on 11th October 2025, and I was there, not just as one of the WLBL volunteers but also as one of the many volunteer map surveyors who each played a part in the preparation of the new map.

This video is not sponsored in any way, it simply reflects my personal enthusiasm for the new map and includes pointers to where it might be purchased by those so inclined to enjoy it as I do.

The inaugural Pathways to Net Zero: Transport Planning in Action event will take place at the Birmingham Council House on 29 January 2026, and will feature keynotes, case studies and expert panels to showcase the ways in which the surface transport network is changing to meet critical targets.

The policy context is challenging. The UK government aims to achieve net zero in transport across all sectors by 2050, driven by the 2021 Transport Decarbonisation Plan (TDP) and a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, with vans following in 2035.
