I agree there is much to do on footway improvements. Last year I doubled the carriageway & footway budget to £26m and I plan to do so again this year. It is starting to make a difference but the problem I am tackling has been a decade in the making.

I was invited on to BBC Radio Scotland this morning to talk a little about Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) and the effect they are having managing problem parking in Edinburgh.

Safety improvements made to junction where schoolboy killed by bin lorry Thomas Wong, 11, was cycling on the pavement when he was struck by the bin lorry.

It is indeed tragic that a fatality was the catalyst for change, however I am pleased these road safety measures have now been put in place on Whitehouse Road.

Location of first walk-in GP clinic announced The new clinic in Edinburgh is the first of 15, which will be open seven days a week.

Jury seems to be out on whether this initiative will work or not but I’m pleased that the Healthy Living Centre in Wester Hailes has been chosen for the trial. I’ll be interested to see the results.

I think it was done to wind up the Green’s if I’m honest. It is a tax free enterprise zone. If 16,000 people find well paid employment it’ll be worth the risk to the exchequer. If they don’t it won’t.

I’ve always been uncomfortable with the tax incentives in this deal, but backed it on the promise of well-paid, unionised jobs. This is a good first step — but as they say, the proof will be in the pudding.
