Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Because, in my opinion, the greatest dilemma public colleges across the country face is that they NEVER receive enough state or federal funding. So they are forced to submit grant applications to the country’s philanthropic organizations to fit an ever-growing gap. THIS IS THE ENTIRE PROBLEM.

I'm still SHOCKED by the obscene rise in billionaire election spending since Citizens United in the NYT piece, despite already knowing that election corruption w/ $ was profound. (Recall that BCRA fought dangerous campaign $ in *2002*)
The article data didn't have a graph, so I made one to show it.

Line graph that shows a blue line of # protests since Trump's 2nd inauguration surpassed, showing these to have exceeded 42k by the end of Jan 2026. A green line counts # of protests during the same time period in Trump's first term and just exceeds 10k.
Overall, we have tallied 4x more protests through Jan 31, 2026 than we had through Jan 31, 2018

I want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who responded. There's a lot of stuff that stinks right now... and that we can work collectively to give ideas and possibilities to a deserving student who has always been told "no" makes me think a better world
is possible. I will collate+ share w them.

A screenshot of People Over Papers’ ICE reporting map. The map resets at 4 am ET every day. In Minnesota, over 100 reports have been filed today, with the overwhelming majority in and around the Twin Cities.
Stay safe. Fuck ICE.
Still around 100 community reports of ICE activity around the Twin Cities today, the most of any state by far.
In case you’re wondering why so many of us aren’t quite taking Homan’s presser today at face value.

A black goblet that is fancy and stuff and looks like a real grail
I was worried about my Arthur class today because literally my only plan was we were going to read Culhwch ac Olwen out loud for the entire 1.25hrs but it was DELIGHTFUL & HILARIOUS OMG
I printed out paper copies and brought a “Grail of Speaking” which we passed around. People could pass whenever

Today my students sat facing one another and close read a game and their own play experience of it, with paper and cards and pencils. Fully engaged, fully present, creativity high, they lingered for almost a half hour after.
The only digital element was me manning a playlist for vibes.

What I appreciated about @sarahscull.bsky.social’s piece (enough to remember it ten years later!) was how awful it was to find the sub-field so implicated - sort of doubly disturbing

A line chart going from Jan 2009 to Jan 2026 showing very few cases until Trump’s second term, where the line takes off nearly vertically, showing more than 6,600 cases in Jan 2026 alone.
Habeas cases filed by immigrants claiming their detention is illegal have taken off to levels we have never seen before. Just look at that chart.

Like 75% of the US Olympic curlers are from Minnesota. A lot of them curl out of two clubs in Saint Paul, one club is in Frogtown, a neighborhood that has been very heavily targeted by ICE. These curlers are good neighbors.

Rethinking Economics, the movement changing how the subject is taught
Born of student disquiet after the 2008 crash, the group says it is reshaping economists’ education
"“By demanding that economics education should be more pluralist, more ethically conscientious, more historically aware, and more oriented towards the real world, Rethinking Economics has exposed the staggering deficiency in the way economists are educated..." www.theguardian.com/environment/...

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Seeing some people talking about how the half-time show critiqued the US colonization of Hawaii and Puerto Rico and others talking about how it showed how everything from Hawaii to Puerto Rico IS America and isn't the inherent slipperiness of symbols simultaneously beautiful and infuriating?

Health Advice From A.I. Chatbots Is Frequently Wrong, Study Shows
Remember last week how Dr. Oz called AI the best solution for rural healthcare shortages?
Well, a new study finds that when patients turn to chatbots for health advice, they end up taking the wrong steps and getting the wrong diagnosis more than half the time.
