William Walker (filibuster) - Wikipedia

Your periodic reminder that this guy existed, and that the word "filibustering" used to have a much different meaning.

I dreamed a fake word last night: "overmoleated." It means something like "unnecessarily finely differentiated," I think

Whoever came up with the idea that hand dryers in public restrooms should live next to faucets in the exact same shallow sink should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law

I remember thinking at the end of Eternals, are they gonna have the guts to reference the giant hand-thing in the ocean at any point after this? Yup!

I think it was very brave that they made a Marvel movie where the necessary points of reference are The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Eternals (2021). And credit to them on that last one: The only thing I remember from that movie is the giant hand-thing in the ocean.

Why one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded caused so little damage A magnitude 8.8 monster off the eastern coast of Russia threatened tens of millions of people with a tsunami risk. So why did Tuesday's mega-quake cause so little harm?

The thing about oppressive heat is that it oppresses. You can see that there are fewer people on the sidewalk in NYC right now.

In fairness to those educated people, beyond, yes, knowing overall the difference between lie and lay, I had to drill the variations repeatedly into my own brain to get them right, and even knowing them as well as I do I'm not above looking at my own book to be sure when "lain" kicks in.
