To be fair, we have been doing that without AI for decades.

One thing to know about George Osborn, is that he co-hosts a podcast with a guy named "Ed Balls".

Yeah, we shouldn't be bankrupting universities. The government should step in if necessary to make sure the students can be treated fairly without universities going under.

I guess loan relief seems to me like it addresses something very different because the loss the students experienced will probably vary a fair bit. Providing schools with more money so they can fairly settle such suits and make up for the extra expenses during COVID makes more sense to me.

That all sounds like an issue with education funding though. It shouldn't be on these students to help make up for it by not getting a refund they are otherwise entitled to.

That's about 1/3 of the yearly tuition for each claimant. If they have a good argument that they received a substantially poorer education due to restrictions, it seems reasonable for them to get a partial refund. It doesn't mean the university did anything wrong. Just that the students were harmed.

Nvm, I looked at his profile and I have my answer.

So, does Torba have any actual criticism of Askell or is it just pure misogyny?

So, I agree you need a positive vision in order to get someone other than "not-Newsom". But "they will lose the general" has been a very effective way to depress voting for candidates in the primary. And so I think it's an important weapon to use.

17.02.2026 18:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

No. My point is that if you don't want to have to choose between Vance and Newsom, the most effective strategy is to make it clear Vance would win before Newsom is ever picked.

(Such as by announcing you wouldn't vote for Newsom in such or any pairing.)

17.02.2026 18:35 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe. But if you want Newsom to lose the primary, your best bet is to make it clear he will lose in the general.

17.02.2026 18:29 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

That's not necessarily an unacceptable strategy, but painting someone as unelectable is a very effective way to get them to lose the primary. And the best way to do that is to make it true. If you help make Newsom unelectable now, you won't have to make that choice.

I assume someone somewhere has studied when boycotts work and it would be interesting to find out more. Maybe @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social might know more about that?

FWIW, I have met people like that. They get uncomfortable when you point at Israel's genocidal actions because they know it's wrong. But they also grew up and often live in a social context where zionism is an uncontested ideology. So they need to deny the atrocities to preserve their own beliefs.

17.02.2026 18:17 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I think the primary audience is supporters who don't see the zionist project in nakedly colonial and racist terms. They are divided between their humanity and empathy and their commitment to the zionist project. They need to be periodically reassured in their comforting fiction of Israel being good.

That's the point. Surely nobody engaged in the mass murder of Muslims would say something like this. So they must not be engaged in the mass murder of Muslims.

My understanding of him is that he's a conservative leftist. He would like to see a socialist utopia, but he's scared of the steps people want to take on the way.

I think if you have a corporate office job, there is almost certainly a significant chunk of your time spent on boring bullshit that LLMs can help you with. Do you need to use them? No. But maybe you can get yourself a longer lunch by saving time on that.

17.02.2026 17:45 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Maybe in theory. I think in practice, office workers are pretty adept at getting their job done in 1/1000th the time and the browsing the Internet the rest of the time.

The philosopher kings being mingled with gold is a reference to the use of precious metals in graphics cards. Plato meant we should be ruled by AIs.

The pitch: "If you have an idea, you can make it even if you have no money and no skills."

The reality: "You have money. You give us some of that money."

I guess I see it the same way that time someone punched that one obnoxious neighbor who was a giant pita to everyone on the block. Should we have laws and rules to allow it? No. Am I sad the guy who threw the punch got away with it? Also no.

Surely you can see how a teacher saying "fuck ICE" does not create a reasonable fear that the teacher might have your kid kidnapped.

I suppose it would be very funny to show up in modern Sparta and ask the Mayor to take control of the United States military.

Or is the plan to kidnap Spartans and establish them as some sort of Janissary class?
