Gender, Genre and the Ghosts of "Crimson Peak" - Rue Morgue CRIMSON PEAK remains Guillermo Del Toro's crowning achievements of subversion.

Was dusting off old writing I’ve done and this piece for @ruemorguemag.bsky.social on CRIMSON PEAK remains one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, and I’m generally not very complimentary on that front πŸ‘»βœ’οΈ

Writers: This is the most miserable man in existence. He is unable to find any lasting happiness with his large house, pool, beautiful wife, two kids, endless succession of attractive women, or his business success.

Bros: I want to be Tony Soprano. He's so amazing.

1000 Women in Horror From the silent era until today, the nightmares that have haunted our screen have been sculpted and embodied by women, but many of those artists have gone....

🚨 Big news 5 years in the making: some friends and I made a documentary! 1000 WOMEN IN HORROR hits Shudder soon, directed by Donna Davies and inspired by my 2020 book of the same name

If you are in Australia, I hope you can make it to the world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival

*King of the Hill* Makes Its Triumphant Return With Bobby running a restaurant in Dallas and dating an SMU coed, the most Dallas show ever gets even more Dallas on August 4.

Incredibly, despite having written about television for 30 years, I have never written an entire piece about King of the Hill. I rectified that here. Special emphasis is given to the Dallas connections. www.dmagazine.com/arts-enterta...

A scene from the sci-fi action film RoboCop, wherein a man who has been exposed to toxic chemicals is hit by a car, which causes him to disintegrate like a mummy made of pork trimmings wrapped in wet toilet paper. His face is visibly detaching from his body and hurtling towards the windshield. The car in question is the 6000 SUX, advertised in the film as β€œbig”, with an MPG of about eight. From a production standpoint, it’s a ’76 Oldsmobile built up with a fiberglass exterior. This scene is arguably more iconic and widely remembered than the ultimate villain’s defeat at the end of the film, although the man being dispatched here is a relatively minor antagonist. This is largely due to the quality and spectacular nature of the practical effects in play.

America Needs Colbert The silencing of jokes and jabs on network airwaves shatters a tangible demonstration of nuanced thinking, free speech and philosophical complexity.

For all of the misappropriation of β€œfree speech” by right-wing disphits, it would be difficult to pinpoint a more clear-cut, textbook case of censorship than a president using the powers and pressures of his office to stifle criticism and dissent. My latest, for @opinion.bloomberg.com (free link):

I wrote about Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS for my ongoing horror column. This is an imperfect movie, but when it works, it's a motherfucker. It's one of the definitive movies of the 2000s for better or worse.

I don’t usually write long reviews but I really wanted to talk about the Years of Lead playing a very important part in THE FIRST OMEN (imo). Been thinking about this since I watched it and noticed no one mentioned it so… I did.
