Calum thinks of his island home, of the sun breaking through Scottish cloud onto fine sandy beaches split with rough black rock. He thinks of his hut, nesting in the cliffs above the port like a gull; his sparse cot, a fire in the meagre stone hearth. Of the wife that awaits him — a pale, skinny thing. Mousey hair and bitten nails, eyes wide and wet. He is a quiet man, stoic in the face of this punishing work and the pitching of the tide. A good man, God-fearing, and a better fisherman. Yet he finds himself a poor husband. His mind wanders. His hands are better suited to tackle and rope than the gentle touch his woman desires. She pushes herself into them, his rough palms, as though he might shape something from the clay of her. Her soft, warm breast. Her thighs at his waist. He worries his fingertips will leave bruises. His lips meet hers ungiving. Between them the bed remains cold. He thinks of her as he pushes his fingers into the slick slit of another dead cod and feels the flesh pushing back. He is as soft now as he is before her. Impotent. Unwilling.
bf was saying he‘s impressed by how i write heterosexual dread. Here’s a little bit from the fisherman/merman thing ive been chipping away at

30.10.2025 12:11 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0A shadow passed over the door, falling across the glaze of the glass, and she sighed, hoping not to see the dove-gray of that man's garb returning, but when she looked up there was a mass of black, pitch-dark, large. It rose up, up past the lintel, up to where she could no longer see. She stood very still. She realized her heart was pounding. She began to soothe herself; it was not at all sustainable to startle at shadows in Yharnam. Reason returned: the thing had been large, but not monstrously so, and so it was not a loping beast or mad stray Pthumerian but perhaps instead a fat crow struggling back up to its roost. She had not heard the typical croak-barks of the glutted city wildlife, just the tip-tip-tap of something scuttling over the glass, but she was tired and if the thing was not coming back then it did not matter. A dozen new species of nightmare were documented in this city every week, and she wanted nothing to do with any of them. She'd leave it for her other customer, the doctor who had once happily reached up her chimney to retrieve a soot-coated teratoma, and Arianna had hidden her face and wept and only somewhat pretended at terror as he had strangled the thing while saying, with contemptuous satisfaction, look, gems! The squeezed polyp of bloodstone had been left on her mantle as a tip, and Arianna had traded it for half the lamp-oil it was worth just to be rid of it.
looking forward to the release of @huntersmarkzine.bsky.social coming up soon, happy to say I’ve got a piece in it! wip preview feat. Arianna and a certain spider man:

27.10.2025 12:05 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0WRITER SPOTLIGHT from THE FINAL DAYS OF YAHAR'GUL: Micolash inhales the final days of Yahar’gul in the form of a strong sea wind stolen from memories of his childhood coastal village. A death smell, salty brine bringing finality. Of course he is working when it comes; he has not stopped working, not since that prophetic visit years ago that showed him his destiny. Still, he is taken by surprise. He regards his fingers. Sickly, frail, arthritic, pressed against the lining of stomachs turned inside out, the smooth underside of lips, the inside of the brain. A vessel held together with sutures he and countless other scholars have placed. A bespoke suit fit for a Great One. Between the scents of decaying flesh and formaldehyde and starched collars of the choir in the church he has built on the bones of innocents, he inhales the briny deep. Yahar’gul is nowhere near the ocean, but here is his reminder that everything returns to the sea. The breeze blows again, making him shaky on his platform. The revelation clenches his heart with fear as he leans onto the vessel, holding tightly for support. He looks down. He is balanced on a piece of wood between two tall ladders. Over a pool of primordial blood, iridescent like oil, but in purples and blacks and grays. The sea wind blows yet again. When he finally understands what the whispers asks him, (not through words, per se, but rather like the sea foam fractalization of the cosmos) he is afraid. Not of the coming of the end of his toils, but rather, if he is ready to meet it. (Hunter's Mark: A Bloodborne Anniversary Zine)
