Another Australian coal company has announced that it has reached a settlement ($95 million)with the GoA over its compensation claims due to Alberta's coal policy flip flops.

Absolutely, agreed! It's unacceptable.

We think the main argument for its removal was that it was built illegally in Critical Habitat for a federally and provincially listed #SpeciesAtRisk. This alone is reason that the DFO should never have issued a permit, given this contravenes SARA legislation.

DFO Issuing Permit for Highwood Bridge 
  - CPAWS Southern Alberta DFO has issued a permit under the Species at Risk Act allowing the destruction of critical habitat to facilitate 14 river and stream crossings, including the reconstruction of the previously illegally...

After removing the bridge that damaged Critical Habitat for bull trout in the Upper Highwood, DFO has approved the construction of another bridge... in the same location.

If only this was satire.

While Northback has promised a new Grassy Mtn mine application it has also continued to try to revive its original proposal in the courts.
The SCC put an end to its latest revival efforts last week.
Good news.
But why is Northback pursuing both routes? Bad faith?

3) @youralberta.bsky.social must ensure that the zero-descharge standard fro selenium is enshrined in any new statues or regulations that are enacted to implement Alberta’s soon to be release new coal policy (CIMI).

Protecting AB’s headwaters is something we ALL agree on. But now we need to act.

2) @youralberta.bsky.social is currently consulting on the proposed nationwide Coal Mining Effluent Regulations (CMER). Minister Schulz must direct her officials to provide scientific and policy advice that support Alberta’s zero-discharge standard for selenium in these forthcoming regulations.

Here's what we need to see:

1) Until Alberta’s new in-progress coal policy (CIMI) is completed and able to give legislative guidance to coal operations, Minister Schulz must issue a Ministerial Order to the AER to implement the zero-discharge standard for selenium.

We value @youralberta.bsky.social's verbal commitment to protecting Alberta’s waters from selenium pollution, but it's time for ACTION.
