One of the Brittlegills (Russula) at #RSPBBroadwaterWarren seen yesterday: Russula sardonia. Its common name is Primrose Brittlegill which always seems odd but I think to do will gill colour (certainly not cap).

Self-heal was also in flower at #RSPBBroadwaterWarren last week.
29.10.2025 21:25 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Well yes I accept that though I would argue, pedantically, that conventionally the term βlegβ is often used for the whole limb often to include the foot and in the confines of a tweet I had done so. A flying GWE shows a lot of leg π
29.10.2025 21:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Dull wet windy today so a reminder of earlier this week: blue sky & berries of Ilex aquifolium. Also know as Holly, Holegn (Anglo-Saxon, perhaps here in East Sussex an original name); cuileann (Gaelic), cuilin (Irish) or celyn (Welsh), as listed by Milner (2011).

Leaf mines on Burdock (Arctium) spotted by a gate into a field off our High Weald lane around sunset last night. I think a larvae of one of the Phytomyza flies (Phytomyza lappae).

27.10.2025 12:28 β π 5 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0Daldinia concentrica, an ascomycete of Ash trees, sometimes called Cramp Balls (L) but I think of them as King Alfredβs Cakes after the legend that on the run from Vikings he distractedly burnt the cakes (R) of a pheasant woman. All these on a single wind-felled Ash in our wood.

Only a quick snap of a Great White Egret Ardea alba at #RSPBDungeness at the weekend but it does show how long their legs are, not always so obvious when they are standing in water or in reedbeds.

In a copse a little further down the lane yesterday I did find a couple more Trooping Funnel, although less trooping more sentry duty but at least old enough to be a funnel.

27.10.2025 13:52 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Some talk of late that requirements for Lawyerβs Wigs may be eased. Not sure whether this will mean we will only refer to these as Shaggy Inkcap or Coprinus comatus in future. (Found these just down out High Weald lane this morning.)

We are lucky with the Rye Bay wetlands as there are opportunities, unless windy, for seeing or at least hearing them (both at Dungeness yesterday).
