How dare these small, shallow men disgrace us and what generations upon generations have been building together like this? Shame on them and shame on us that we’ve allowed them to become so emboldened.

People don’t just have value because of how much they’re putting in your pocket. But people should know that the number of years families work and pay taxes to get to ILR means most have paid infinitesimally more in without being allowed to have any say on government than they’ve taken out.

This moral injury isn’t just to the people who float the policy and debase themselves or feel targeted by it. It injures all of us, tears at the fabric of what our glorious patchwork society is, how we are all able to build together and take care of one another.

That’s the point, isn’t it? To make people feel fearful, unvalued, to tell them they’re untermenschen no matter how long they’ve lived here, how much they and their families are part of the community, of our wider society and of the economy that we are all churning together.

A lot of people worried for themselves and their loved ones today with Reform floating revoking indefinite leave to remain.
