One amazing thing Conan Doyle does—every once in a while Sherlock Holmes is wrong. And like. It’s such a heightened reality nobody would blame him for making Holmes infallible. But these handful of Holmes Failure stories are SO COOL.

I think it’s hard to overstate Conan Doyle’s contribution not just to mystery, but to all of genre fiction and adventure storytelling. Like—what is Lex Luthor but a Moriarty?

And it’s aways so glaringly obvious that no single storyline was actually interesting enough to support a novel, so the three mediocre stories buttress and run interference for each other’s mediocrity.

I’ve noticed more and more authors doing this thing where they write from *different perspectives* but instead of Faulkner with the perspectives meticulously intertwined and enriching each other, authors will take three barely related stories, chop em up, and tell them by switching back and forth.

Look quitting my job was a bit of a wake up call regarding my endlessly arrested development. It’s time to grow up. So now, instead of drinking a 20oz bottle of Coke each day I drink a 12oz can.

JG Farrell is a British writer from the 70’s who wrote the Empire Trilogy, which documents the crumbling of the British empire in Ireland, India, and Singapore in the first half of the 1900’s and every book is basically that “Are we the baddies?” comedy sketch.
