i will say again that given the trajectory of the white house so far, strident opposition a la 2017 would have absolutely been the most prudent and effective decision and the absence of that opposition in the first two months made things demonstrably worse.

never liked Gavin Newsom, but he played his hand all wrong. he could have leaned into being lib Darth Vader and ran on a platform of revenge and really gotten some excitement behind him but instead he's choosing to simply be a milquetoast Dem who happens to be evil in his spare time

The party’s political success cannot be relative to its rival. Even if Republicans’ views of their party were similarly negative right now, Democrats must build absolute—not relative—political support. Give voters something to vote FOR.

It’s so clear that many Democratic leaders want to let Republican chaos be the story. They’re relying on the negative impact of conservative policies to propel them to future electoral victories. That’s not sufficient, as it’s clear their own base is unhappy with elected Democrats right now.

🚨 Everyone needs to call their Dem Senator right now. They are starting to cave.

Tell them:
1. Vote NO on Cloture
AND
2. Vote NO on the Republican spending bill.

Don’t let them pivot to reconciliation. GOP doesn’t need Dem votes on that and they know it.

i think rage at congestion pricing is a good example of how no one believes that the world can be positive sum anymore. like, people pay a small fee to get access to a faster commute — saving them valuable time — and the money improves public transit, saving other people valuable time. it's win-win!

Biden is more toxic politically than the transgender people Republicans tried to vilify and some Democrats are now trying to run scared from.

But this is Biden's legacy now: By winning in 2020, he ultimately created a false sense of security for Democrats. And by remaining in the 2024 race until July, he is the individual I hold most responsible for this second Trump term.

If he'd stepped aside to allow a competitive primary, I'd be praising him along with every Democrat I know. Historic investments in climate change? The most progressive domestic policy in modern history? Shifting the economy to work for more middle class Americans? Truly amazing.

Instead, he chose ego over country (and even party!), running a zombie campaign until the last possible minute and barely providing Harris a runway to lift her campaign off the ground. I'm not alone in saying this hurt her in the general.

But I--like so many young progressives--took him at his word when he told us he'd only serve one term, as a transition. If he'd kept his word, it could have built on his positive legacy.

His service as Obama's VP solidified a positive image that was weakened by more progressive candidates questioning his longer legacy on issues like bussing and criminal justice. I'll admit I didn't think he could even win against Trump, and was of course elated when he did.

Since 2019, I've thought about Biden's legacy more than I thought I'd care to share. In this final month of his first and last presidential term, I'm reflecting even more. Watching him flounder during the 2019 Democratic primary debates, I wished he had stayed in retirement.
