Well done to them! While I try to instill social niceties in my kids because it's an important skill in navigating the world, I would also never judge a child for forgetting to say please or thank you. That stuff is *hard* when you're already dealing with an overwhelming situation!

Yeah i'm a millennial and 'fetish' just means 'bdsm aesthetic' to me (e.g. a 'fetish model' = a sexy cybergoth). I'm not a porn consumer so I think this usage must've been pretty normie/mainstream for me to catch on.

"As AI becomes embedded across professions" that weaselly passively construction is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, like AI is a natural phenomenon rather than people actively making choices.

The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI (permalink)
Last night, I gave a speech for the University of Washington's "Neuroscience, AI and Society" lecture series, through the university's Computational Neuroscience Center. It was called "The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI," and it's based on the manuscript for my next book, "The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life After AI," which will be out from Farrar, Straus and Giroux next June:

"AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more."

This piece on AI by Cory Doctorow is spectactular.

Am only halfway through so far (excellent read!) but had to come back here to note that Creative Commons have in fact been working on a system of AI 'preference signals', although their draft proposal did not include an actual opt-out (they did get some criticism for that).

How Elites Rebrand Power as Virtue When billionaires fund the revolution, the outcome is already fixed Rutger Bregman, once hailed as the Dutch progressive mascot, rose to global attention

Yes! This essay by Anita Naidu is another excellent critique of the Bregman brand of capitalist-approved, power-centred 'morality'. I'd fully expect Keir Starmer to find him 'extraordinary' but George Monbiot? That's a bit shocking

Let's hope Monbiot asks the extraordinary Bregman some questions about the various billionaires funding his inoffensive and fawning 'idealism'

There are so many people living lives of quiet dignity despite horrific medical news or poverty or tragedy where every day they still wake up and try to be good people in the world even as the world pushes against them and it makes me even angrier at the absolute shitheads that rule over things

Klaar, denk ik. Er klopt iets niet aan het stekeltje rechtsonder en ik had eigenlijk iets meer moeten doen met het bovenste rode vlak (die gouden spiralen waren pure luiheid) maar ik laat het los, het is ok zo!

I think it's because she's glued her lashes weirdly high up on her eyelids (you can see her eyelids extending several millimitres below the lashes). The video's still incredibly uncanny but it made me feel better to discover that the inhuman eyes are mostly trickery

If a student doesn't know / can't do something, they won't magically know or be able to do it with more time. If they can do it with a bit more time, they had it in them to begin with.

Yup back when I was still teaching I always felt that if a significant number of students were unable to complete the exam in time, I'd set a bad exam.

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

#DDfotos #02creatie

I think where the parallel falls apart is that calvinist salvation is essentially random, and that makes us grateful ("There but for the grace of God go I"). Whereas people whose happiness depends on seeing an outgroup mistreated also need to believe the outgroup is intrinsically Other.

I remember teenage me asking my catechist about the possibility of universal salvation, his answer was that God would lose all credibility if he'd let bad people into heaven. I said that sounded like he was espousing works righteousness and he became very flustered
