Stumbling upon - The History of the Web Something like a channel changer, for the web. That's what the idea was at first. But it led to a whole new path of discovery that even the site's creators couldn't have predicted.

I miss that internet

Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us? Why does the online world seem so toxic compared with normal life? Our research shows that a small number of divisive accounts could be responsible – and offers a way out

"...social media is less like a neutral reflection of society and more like a funhouse mirror. It amplifies the loudest and most extreme voices while muting the moderate, the nuanced and the boringly reasonable. (...) Just 10% of users produce roughly 97% of political tweets."

Hope is a risk; especially when you’ve known what it is to dream for better and only be met with the tyranny of degradation, greed, and violent appetites.

But despair is a concession.

Be careful of who you let regulate your dreaming. Always remember who benefits from our hopelessness.

'The day I went to prison, I got my life back' For many people, receiving a jail sentence would be the worst thing that ever happened to them. For one woman it was almost a relief.

If you stop thinking that Germany's response to anything Israel is about Holocaust guilt and instead about rewriting German history, you'd understand German politics better. 🧵

Enshittification as a matter of taste “Enshittification” is a termed coined by Cory Doctorow in 2023 to describe a pattern of decreasing quality observed in online services and products. Since Doctorow’s post, there’s been no shortage of ...

“Going forward, I think taste and style are more valuable than ever before. In an era where we’re able to rapidly generate cheap low quality content or software at a scale we’ve never seen before, we will need people with taste in the mix”

Although I keep coming back, I don't see that as a failure. Sometimes it's okay to be scammed. It's important to me though that I do it intentionally and consciously.

Following this, the reason I get back to them is, most of the time, about the feeling that I might get something valuable out of them *this time*, especially when something significant is happening that I want to follow or when I'm too tired to evaluate what is trashy fun and what is quality fun.

Maybe part of the reason why I get back to those apps over and over again is because I forget the feeling when I decided to remove those apps. Then I re-experience them following the cycle ad-infinitum. That feeling is something like the realisation of getting scammed: I pay more than I receive.

Usually I'm not too aware of how much time I'm spending on apps and how much I get back, in terms of stuff I care about: learning something interesting, being inspired by something or someone, some ideas to think more about or having "quality" fun.
