At this event, there were booths for local orgs, but compared to the market section it was minimal. The organizers in the booths waited for people to walk up to engage them before responding, it was muted and awkward. Presence alone isn't outreach...

It reframes an annual celebration of our collective past into an identity-exclusive shopping event. It weaves a time-is-money variable into every interaction. Pride, especially when we're being abandoned or hunted by the government, needs to respond to the moment. There needs to be more than market.

even as I say that I don't really believe it. We absolutely need to heal before we can thrive, yes. But I've been talking about a pride event that was mostly just a market. A once-a-year market doesn't create the framework for an alternative economic block...

Which is to say there's no liberation in capitalist realism. Maybe at best there's temporary relief. And if I'm being charitable and rose-tinted, maybe that relief is necessary to get to something more egalitarian and sustainable? I guess the visibility of a market is better than no visibility, BUT

But at the same time, if queer / marginalized groups do manage to create a system of mutually uplifting wealth distribution through regular identity based markets, I think there's a ceiling where the city & corporations chase you out of every visible space, or you risk a tulsa inspired massacre.

Especially when more direct forms of community engagement, care, and exchange often gets us chased off. Markets attract shoppers. Markets attract money. Markets don't look radical or transformative, and there can be safety in that camouflage, if that's what it is.

But at the same time, marginalized people have been, and continue to be, barred from financial prosperity. I can sympathize with the urge to frame community gatherings as a moment to financially uplift ourselves without capitulating or caving to the influence of external money

A vendor and an attendee really just want to be part of a community, but a big dollar bill jumps between them and shouts “Isn’t there someone you forgot to ask?”

Identity groups aren’t inherently communities, markets aren’t inherently community events. Pride markets billed as community events are structured exactly like the “myth of consensual sex” meme.

Yeah! I’m real proud of my little efforts. Nice to take a break from it, but also eager to get back. I already reworked the system I was using to call on facial expressions to be waaaaay leaner. I should be able to speed up coding conversations by a lottttt.
