dense housing not limited to arterials - how do these neighborhoods even thrive?

Ann Arbor policymakers take note:
โThese moves can clearly save lives; researchers donโt doubt their effectiveness. Even better, many residents are eager to see them implemented. The missing link: policymakers courageous enough to do the right thing.โ

People living in multi-family housing deserve to be protected from the noise, pollution, and traffic violence of arterials. Instead, they will be used as insulation to buffer their neighbors living in the quiet low-density Residential interiors of our superblocks.

This is what is upsetting about Ann Arbor City Councilโs push to site dense housing on arterials with Transition and Hub land use categories and cap Residential at three story triplexes. Dense housing near schools and neighborhood parks is as close to transit, but healthier.

Activate climateโs โsilent majorityโ to supercharge action, experts say
Making concerned people aware their views are far from alone could unlock the change so urgently needed
A huge 89% majority of global people [56% even in the United States] want stronger action to fight the #ClimateCrisis, but mistakenly believe theyโre in a minority.
The โsilent majorityโ for #ClimateAction needs to get loud.
People want action. Smart cities need to go much further, much faster.

#A2Council should consider some of these treatments on nearby side streets when major roads are calmed.

Dropped into the meeting Rainier Valley Safe Streets hosted tonight to get feedback from community members on potential council-funded safety investments.
It lasted about 10 minutes before being interrupted by someone complaining about how "no one" uses the bike lanes on the South End.

Justin we love you but as a chart enthusiast you're too smart to post charts with arbitrary start points and linear trendlines. Here's a couple we made, with the same data, that shows traffic fatalities are on the rise!
But onto a more serious analysis of this ๐งต

Iโm hoping that the Ann Arbor delegation can get behind this and that City Council can put it on their Policy Agenda. Intelligent Speed Assistance technology just makes sense and it would be great to see #Michigan join other states in doing this.

Deaths and serious injuries due to traffic violence are unacceptable and preventable. Every single one is a policy failure, and this blood is on the hands of our leaders. In 2026, they must stop privileging driver speed and convenience at the expense of safety.

Coverage of our abject failure in meeting our Vision Zero commitments in 2025. Ann Arborโs City Council needs to make sure we follow through on all the designs and studies and targets and actually make infrastructure improvements to make pedestrians safe on our streets.
