And this misunderstanding leads to ignoring one of the big opportunities brought by renewables: sometimes it gives us really cheap electricity. Such as: today!

There is a huge opportunity here that we should learn to take advantage of...

Britain’s woes began when natural-gas prices spiked after Russia invaded Ukraine. That put up electricity costs across Europe, but Britain was hit hard. Since it pushed coal off the grid in the 2010s, gas (as the marginal producer) has almost always set the electricity price (see chart 2). In France, nuclear is usually the price-setter; in Germany it is often coal; in some countries hydroelectric dominates. Wind and solar seldom do: their output varies too much with the weather and grids usually need at least some baseload power from elsewhere.

But then we get this telling mistake.
No, it's not because they are variable that wind or solar rarely set the price - it's because their marginal cost is virtually zero!
The marginal price is set by the *highest* cost power source needed. Renewables is almost always the lowest cost source...

Is Britain’s net-zero push to blame for its high energy prices? A mighty rise in electricity costs has complicated the drive for clean power

I want to come back properly on this Economist piece that questions Britain's approach to net zero.

It gets three things wrong imo:

1. Ignoring periods of v cheap renewable energy
2. Misdiagnosing the relative costs of renewables
3. Looking backwards, not forwards.

Looking to buy a AFC fan a birthday gift.. why are @afc.co.uk hoodies so dire. AFC have an Adidas supply contract, but zero Adidas hoodies. Man Utd (and others), granted a much bigger team have this design, surely Adidas can adapt and sell them.

When did Scottish Labour put up a viable alternative? When did Scottish Labour last have an FM and Party leading at Holyrood. Similar answer to your question.

Due to funding pressures caused by a dire economy and inflationary spending elsewhere. You can say all you like about specific cuts, but you don’t mention the context as to why.
