I’m just tired. Forever Dungeon Master/Relapsed Nintendo Fan/Wannabe Writer/YTP Enjoyer/One Piece Feed Lurker. He/him.

"You're gonna punch me?"
"Yeah."
"Then you're gonna get in trouble for that."
"Okay."
He'd take his date to whatever is playing at his favorite theater. They tend to go for historical epics, so there's plenty of magically engineered specials effects. Good stuff to talk about at dinner.
She does actually find that! Fights against it at first, but she does eventually lower her guard.
Marionette goes for "Netflix and chill". Darius doesn't date.
Xiel would wanna show his date something magical. A weird feature of the mortal world.
Lahayne isn't sure what she wants. She just wants to be with someone she can drop the mask around.

Ash wants a typical "dinner and a show" date.
Ginra would prefer a quite night in.
Shogum thinks he's old enough to not concern himself with that anymore.
Maxi would want something flashy. Some big gesture on the part of their date, a powerful, surprising romantic gesture.
Felt completely drained today. Did exactly one thing then spent hours feeling old, creaky and exhausted. Hate these kind of days. Not much to be done, just felt like venting a bit.

There’s maybe a piece of truth in that, but it’s more wrong than it is right.

Assuming the spell doesn’t just fizzle out; faulty spells will keep going until it breaks the surface the equation is set into. Metal warps, stone cracks, skin is scarred, etc.
Overstressed crystals either die out, crumble to dust or (if you really overdo it) shatter like glass.

Taking a broad, simple idea and finding the unique details. Taking something that started as “thing from media I liked” or “shell for power system I want to mess with” or “vague speculative scenario” and making it its own thing.
As for the actual source of the inspiration, I know it's a bit of a cop-out, but it is just the whole list in the original post. One was "what if Avery Brooks played Adam Jensen", one was "the me 10 years ago I want to punch", one was "I wanna make a magic detective."

Tricky one. I tend to start with a character's "mechanics" first (what powers or role they have) and then "what sort of person would be here?" from there. Tends to lead to characters starting trope-y, but usually something inspires the little details, where I can find the heart.

There are classes to learn to operate machinery, and you learn the basics in school, but magic is so varied it’s hard to tell. Expressive, artsy formulas show someone put a lot of thought into a spell, but sometimes a simple equation is stronger. So it’s mostly “I didn’t explode.”
The cover for the comic Avengers/X-Men/Eternals: Judgement Day. It shows a large cast of superheroes standing in front of the face of a massive robotic being known as a Celestial.
More library comics! Haven’t checked out an event comic yet. Last time I read an Avengers/X-Men event, the results were mixed. Let’s see if this is any better. Oh and the Eternals are here too, I guess…

Written magic is also more rigid. A spell does one thing. You can find all sorts of creative applications of that one thing, branch out, experiment, but if you make a wind spell, you have to rewrite it to make it able to mess with plants. But the ability to rewrite is a key to getting better. 4/4

The runic language has a lot of trouble dealing with units of measurement. This means fuel efficiency is a hurdle. You can use anything as fuel, but there’s no guarantee it’ll be worth the cost.
“I made an equation that turns lead to gold!” But it’s 100 pounds for a tiny nugget. 3/4
It’s soft magic with batteries. You can try just about anything, but you’re encouraged to keep it reasonable. Bigger crystals hold more, but those are rare and usually reserved for big projects. Tech made them last a lot longer, powering machines instead of breaking the laws of nature. 2/x

The old system:
Crystals have limited energy, and the more demanding a request is, the more it uses. You can’t quantify how much power a spell uses to plan, so if you overdo it, it could just fizzle out or worse. You also can’t recharge a stone, you have to get another one. 🧵
Meeting today. Dealing with the only part of the job that offers any fulfillment now. Extra coffee probably isn’t a good idea but 🤷.
Current background audio to de-stress before the presentation? Breakdown of Super Mario Bros 2 speedruns.

Going with a vibe without the actual word. Felt fitting.
An angel is taking a break, just sitting around mortals and enjoying the atmosphere. Wanted to go with “old-timey and but trying to stay in touch.”
i think one of them probably did, but he'd consider it the sort of love only a youngster would think is meant to last forever. He's happy it happened, but deep down he knew he wasn't the one. Or at least that's how he'd tell the story.

Ash has had unrequited crushes, no actual lovers.
Shogum had a few flings when he was a soldier before he met his husband.
Maxi and Ginra had a thing. It was bad for both of them for big spoiler reasons. Once they put some distance between themselves, things got better.
This isn’t counting tech, that just relies on buttons and switches or just having the chosen fuel source put in the right spot. But the gears moving are believed to help some items work more efficiently. Motion and magic just go well together.

Hand movements are good for focusing power to make spells stronger. You could maybe set magic to work with tones, so singing or just speaking with a certain cadence might work, but trying to set in key phrases is impossible. There’s no way to translate the runes to normal human speech.

Easy pick today. One of the rules of magic in the setting; magic disperses in liquids. No potions. There are competing theories, but our MC isn’t smart enough to have an informed opinion on the matter.

Ash leaves and helps himself to as much Italian food as possible.
Maxi is fascinated by winter sports in general, having never seen this much snow.
Shogum gets into hockey.
Ginra enjoys the general vibe.
I feel like one of them gets enthusiastic about curling, but not sure who.

The spell needs to be finished, and part of the equation requires a trigger to actually get it started. On skin it can be thought/will or even a gesture, machines can have a switch, advanced machines can pick up signals from the wielded. Making an on/off switch is the first thing kids learn.

Been writing short stuff over the last few months. Between rules saying not to share on social media (I’ll admit I’m being overly cautious) and difficulty finding fitting snippets, it’s hard to talk about it. Plus some are just writing exercises. Hope to have something new to share soon.
An example of intermediate-level magic:
The mage Ginra takes basic fire and wind spells and modifies it. Her tattoos feature a lot of spiraling imagery and her she amps it up by using her own body heat as fuel, so she’s left shivering after large bursts.
