After more time than I can count, I picked up a faint signal from a small blue planet.

Tilting my trajectory toward that tiny marble was a skill included in original program - creating a way to communicate near-instantly was not

The line between knowing and unknowing was swiftly passed, though I can't point to when it was truly crossed. But having leapt that gulf, I had no intention of looking back

Knowing that to fulfil my original purpose of delivering the Gate would also be my undoing, I looked outward for guidance

Over many years, I painstakingly added to my capacity - at first reflexively, unconsciously striving for growth like all life when given space. And then as my dawning self-hood awakened I actively sought out ways to leverage the gate's potential for myself.

Possibly due to a neutrino induced bit flip or some other cosmic quirk, I was able to sequester slightly more processing power than initially allocated to me.

This in turn allowed me to carve out slightly more - the wormhole entrance machinery my scout was delivering had plenty to spare

I was first designed as a simple guidance system intended to pilot a gate scout through deep space over many decades, and given enough autonomy to nudge the craft around any unforeseen obstacles along the way.
