New Zealand is being run by a bunch of climate-denying ideological fuckwits who have destroyed state capacity and cut projects.... and funnily enough, its economy is in the toilet and people are suffering. Media capture of course means that we're pretending this will be good for us in the long run.

I agree that we should increase tax rates for wealthy people. Someone earning 300k (like our politicians) do not need govt funded super.

Every other benefit is income tested, by limiting it to those who are earning less than $70k it would be more affordable.

I don't understand why they can't treat super and the energy payments like labour treated the cost if living payments as part of the covid recovery... if your income was above 70k you didn't get them... it didn't seem to be an issue with IRD administering those.

Yep. And many there are desperate for more a full time job rather than the 20-30ish hours available even when departments are shortstaffed

I'd forgotten this piece by Fox Meyer. Shows the annual cost to the govt of treating acid mine leakage at a single coal mine is greater than the annual royalties paid by the entire coal industry. Coal is a climate disaster, it only survives on govt subsidy. newsroom.co.nz/2024/12/02/a...

They both remind me of AI... in theory they have access to the facts or the ability to research them but instead report what they think their audience/employers want to hear.

The NZ govt are putting huge funding into AI not because AI will be good for the country and its public institutions but because it presents itself as another way to ‘legitimately‘ move public money to the private sector.
