Scientists fear weaker methane target signals wider retreat from climate action After cutting methane targets, New Zealand has a choice: shoulder the burden at huge cost - or cause more warming to the planet.

I thought I’d have a go at answering the question: what’s the flow on effect on emissions budgets from the methane cuts?

The answer was worse than I had anticipated

Ours was vocal about Labour's being the best water option & pro Māori wards... she was outvoted by a farmer promising "common sense" & "cutting unnecessary red tape".

Welfare changes are trying to drag us back to a time most of us have left behind OPINION: It’s not the 1980s any more, as much as the Government wants to drag us back there.

β€œAlmost 7 in 10 people in New Zealand supported lifting benefits in early 2021; and after the government increased benefits in 2021, 60% thought income support should have been increased further.

It’s not the 1980s any more, as much as the Govt wants to drag us back there.” @maxdnharris.bsky.social

New Zealand is being run by a bunch of climate-denying ideological fuckwits who have destroyed state capacity and cut projects.... and funnily enough, its economy is in the toilet and people are suffering. Media capture of course means that we're pretending this will be good for us in the long run.

I agree that we should increase tax rates for wealthy people. Someone earning 300k (like our politicians) do not need govt funded super.

07.10.2025 21:06 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Every other benefit is income tested, by limiting it to those who are earning less than $70k it would be more affordable.

07.10.2025 19:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

I don't understand why they can't treat super and the energy payments like labour treated the cost if living payments as part of the covid recovery... if your income was above 70k you didn't get them... it didn't seem to be an issue with IRD administering those.

Yep. And many there are desperate for more a full time job rather than the 20-30ish hours available even when departments are shortstaffed

Perhaps MPs should be means tested

05.10.2025 18:55 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yep, it's the same old "bash a beneficiary" or "lazy youf" rhetoric to gain a couple of votes.

Lazy Luxon chasing 4000 kids to save approx $1.3M year but won't chase Destiny church charitable trust or Gloriavale, with charities estimated to be avoiding $2.0B year in tax avoidance.

Every day there's a new reason to be ashamed and disgusted with our govt representatives.

Minister orders more classrooms to help struggling construction workers The Government is ordering new classrooms, as it looks for immediate fixes to stem back-to-back reports of a declining construction sector.

Is it really "fast-tracking" or "accelerating" when it's basically restarting some of the 100-odd projects you iced a year ago, putting the construction sector into a nosedive? www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...

All of Govt's 2024 coal earnings spent treating damages at a single mine The Stockton mine is hoping for a fast-tracked 25-year extension, as historic damages are costing the Crown more than it earns from all coal mine royalties

I'd forgotten this piece by Fox Meyer. Shows the annual cost to the govt of treating acid mine leakage at a single coal mine is greater than the annual royalties paid by the entire coal industry. Coal is a climate disaster, it only survives on govt subsidy. newsroom.co.nz/2024/12/02/a...

They both remind me of AI... in theory they have access to the facts or the ability to research them but instead report what they think their audience/employers want to hear.

Ardern resigned when her preferred PM poll numbers dropped to 30%, saying she clearly wasn't what NZ wanted anymore.

Luxon is on 20% and still adamant he's doing a fucking brilliant job.

Never send a white dude CEO to do a competent woman's job.

Going to take more than austerity cuts & talking about growth to improve the lives of those left here who don't want to or can't move overseas. Countdown on for 2026 to roll the CoC govt out.

The NZ govt are putting huge funding into AI not because AI will be good for the country and its public institutions but because it presents itself as another way to β€˜legitimatelyβ€˜ move public money to the private sector.
