How much influence did white supremacist groups have on Chicago housing?
Extremist groups of the 1950s played a part, alongside real estate and neighborhood organizations, in keeping Chicago segregated.
Segregation in Chicago wasn’t accidental.
It was built – by realtors, banks, and neighborhood groups.
White supremacists organized riots & supplied the muscle.
The racism was systemic.
And its echoes are still with us.

Extremist groups of the 1950s played a part, alongside real estate and neighborhood organizations, in keeping Chicago segregated.
In 1951, a Black family tried to move into Cicero, IL.
The landlord said yes.
The tenants said yes.
A white supremacist said no.
Then a mob burned their belongings in the street.
Thousands watched. And that was just one part of Chicago’s housing history.

Extremist groups of the 1950s played a part, alongside real estate and neighborhood organizations, in keeping Chicago segregated.
How did Chicago – one of the most segregated cities in the country – get that way?
It started with realtors who refused to sell.
Banks that denied loans.
Neighborhood groups that fought integration.
Policies designed to exclude.
Then came white supremacists adding fuel to the hate & violence.
