One of the organizers of a mobile fresh market that I volunteer with talked to me about how the universities in ATL send students to their neighborhoods to survey people and research and write about how poverty affects the community.

β€œThen we never see them again. And nothing changes.”

The Big Money in Today’s Economy Is Going to Capital, Not Labor Soaring profits and stocks funnel more of GDP toward companies, their top employees and shareholders. AI will intensify this trend.

I learned this year that the people are dancing at salsa night!! Find one in your area and go have fun.

The ones in ATL are lit and diverse. Highly recommend.

I've been watching so many plant-based and vegan cooking videos from Black people on YouTube and my goodness there's so many gems.

I made this last week and it was also incredible.

I agree. Both the NFL and the NBA want to become as popular as soccer is on a global scale. They'll put potential profits over everything.

Also it’s a lot easier to blame β€œthe algorithm” than β€œwhat people enjoy watching”, because the former suggests there an easy or quick fix and the latter…doesn’t. bsky.app/profile/jim....

People often jump to saying online propaganda is either the work of radicalised actors, or else Russia.

In practice, it’s amazing how often the answer is much simpler – someone is chasing either (a) clout, (b) money, or (c) both.

Yes the companies creating the generative AI tools certainly are profiting. I meant that companies forcing workers to use them may or may not see profit (or improved productivity). If the strategy is just "you have to use AI tools" the result is often just more noise and worse collaboration.

Oh don't even get me started on meetings. Use AI to record all meeting notes, everyone gets notes emailed to them, follow up meeting reveals that no one paid attention or reviewed the notes.

1 ) Use generative AI tools to produce code, docs, presentations, emails, Slack messages
2) Use AI tools to summarize the overwhelming amount of content generated by AI tools
3) No one knows anything because everyone is feeding knowledge to and taking knowledge from AI tools
4) Profit???

This is important for the way it both does and does not use all of atproto -

People are not meant to be in service to the protocol - the protocol is in service to the people.

Translation and transformation - community boundaries - these things arΓ© important

They’re also forgetting that decentralization has no value on its own. The purpose of decentralization is *against* oppressive structures. If a community agrees on an implementation that works for the community, that’s good for them!

The protocol is not more important than the people.

How We Lost Communication to Entertainment How We Lost Communication to Entertainment par Ploum - Lionel Dricot.

Excerpt from the blogpost β€œHow We Lost Communication to Entertainment” on ploum.net:

No More Communication

But aren't social networks also communication networks? That's what I thought. That's how they historically were marketed. That's what we all believed during the "Arab Spring."

But that was a lie. Communication networks are not profitable. Social networks are entertainment platforms, media consumption protocols.

Historically, they disguised themselves as communication platforms to attract users and keep them captive.

The point was never to avoid missing a message sent from a fellow human being. The point was always to fill your time with "content."

We dreamed of decentralised social networks as
"email 2.0." They truly are "television 2.0."”

Another excerpt:

Communications protocols are boring. They don't give you that well-studied random hit of dopamine.

They don't make you addicted.

β€’ On Social Media (gem.sdf.org)
β€’ Experiential Pica (www.lesswrong.com)

They don't make you addicted which means they are not hugely profitable and thus are not advertised. They are not new. They are not as shiny as a new app or a new random chatbot.

The problem with communication protocols was never the protocol part. It's the communication part. A few sad humans never wanted to communicate in the first place and managed to become billionaires by convincing the rest of mankind that being entertained is better than communicating with other humans.
