I’m in my mid-forties and, during my entire adulthood, the relentless haranguing, stereotyping, scapegoating, chastising, bullying of Muslims has been a central part of British public life.

It’s already been shown that crimes by immigrants or people of colour get far more publicity, including the Met police’s own mugshot gallery. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/metrop...

The criminal trial system - properly functioning or not - is not a remotely credible route to justice. Preventative measures are the only way, and carceral bodies (including courts) are the worst possible vehicles for those measures.

At 43 I've had enough of being either overlooked by the old boy's club, or treated like a dog. There appears to be no escape in the workplace. And there are people worse off than me.

To anyone looking to help Sudanese families on the ground, @thomaserena.bsky.social has been campaigning for several families for a really long time now. Your $1 or $5 donation goes a long way and helps literally keep folks alive.

The Trial by Franz Kafka: Chapter 7

Trying to come up with ideas for managing student expectations of law clinics. It's been sold to them as fireworks, but it's if anything a cheap sparkler. Thinking of attuning them to bureaucracies of practice, through Kafka's the Trial @ ch7: www.online-literature.com/franz-kafka/...

What happens when the US declares war on your parents? The Black Panther cubs know The Black Panthers shook America awake before the party was eviscerated by the US government. Their children paid a steep price, but also emerged with unassailable pride and burning lessons for today

Must read: The Guardian spoke to nine children whose parents were members of the Black Panther Party β€” and explored how their lives were forever changed

My piece for History Workshop looks back at what feels, I'm sure to me and so many other academics in the UK, like a decade-long crisis in universities. A crisis of politics, of a particularly venomous form of "education as market" ideology, and now a crisis of desperate, annihilating job cuts. 1/2

What these morally bankrupt probation officers and their kin want to do is ignore evidence, and instead double down on the most toxic of tools, to further ultimately racist and discriminatory ideologies.

Ask any criminologist what the greatest determinant of reopening is (leaving aside the idiocy of risk assessment in the first place) and they'll tell you it's age.

From this fearmongerer's claims we're accordingly asked to believe this person's adolescent preoccupations (to which they confessed) rendered them far riskier than the algorithmic scores (which didn't account for TiCs) suggested.

Their argument was that prior to being sentenced for what we call the index offence (the offence they're currently serving a sentence for) the client asked for a number of robberies to be taken into consideration (TiCs).

I had a parole decision recently (I didn't act for the client at the hearing) where a probation officer had sought to argue at length that the OASys algorithm - notorious for overestimating risk, particularly for so-called marginalised groups - had in fact underestimated it.
