The criminal trial system - properly functioning or not - is not a remotely credible route to justice. Preventative measures are the only way, and carceral bodies (including courts) are the worst possible vehicles for those measures.

From this fearmongerer's claims we're accordingly asked to believe this person's adolescent preoccupations (to which they confessed) rendered them far riskier than the algorithmic scores (which didn't account for TiCs) suggested.

Their argument was that prior to being sentenced for what we call the index offence (the offence they're currently serving a sentence for) the client asked for a number of robberies to be taken into consideration (TiCs).

I had a parole decision recently (I didn't act for the client at the hearing) where a probation officer had sought to argue at length that the OASys algorithm - notorious for overestimating risk, particularly for so-called marginalised groups - had in fact underestimated it.
