But this kind of feels a bit... meh to me. Don't really care about lore because I'm too busy enjoying 2 mates yelling down mic because I accidentally drove our Warthog and enemy flag off a cliff

I think this is an effort to expand what parts of the game people use. I've always enjoyed the whole hog but I guess its to make people who only care about story turn up for team slayer?

The Greg Bear trilogy on its own is fantastic. Arguably my favourite Halo novels.

And given that its all set wayyy in the past you really don't need any game knowledge to enjoy them.

The original Eric Nylud books and the stories around them work well because... you just need to pick them up and enjoy them. You actually don't even need to play Halo imo.

Newer books are focused on being intertwined, and viewed by themselves are lesser for it I feel.

End of Halo 5? Big cliffhanger. There's a book you can read to *try* and understand what happens between that and infinite. (Although Shadows of Reach slaps imo).

Similar with Halo Wars 2

End of Halo 4 - Didact is actually sort of defeated in a comic
Halo 4 Spartan Ops - Main villain is very well set up in a trilogy, not Halo 4 at all. What happens after the spartan ops cliffhanger? Got some comics for you.

Halo 5? Kills Halo 4 Spartan Ops villain off in a cutscene mission 1.

I think that Halo books pre 343 were generally better because they could be enjoyed but never put the games into a position where they relied on them. As soon as 343 roll around...
