Whereas, certain lands within the State of Pennsylvania have been or may hereafter be acquired by the United States under authority of the Act of Congress approve March first, nineteen hundred and eleven (36 Stat. 961), entitled "An Act to enable any State to cooperate with any other State or States, or with the United States, for the protection of the watersheds of navigable streams, and to appoint a commission for the acquisition of lands for the purpose of conserving the navigability of navigable rivers"; and, Whereas, it appears that the public good will be promoted by reserving and setting apart said lands as a public forest reservation, and the same have been designated by the Secretary of Agriculture as the Allegheny National Forest. Now, therefore, I, Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States of America, by virtually of the power in me vested by section eleven of said Act and by section twenty-four of the Act of March tree, eighteen hundred and ninety one (26 Stat. 1103), entitled "An act to repeal timber culture laws and for other purposes", do proclaim that there are herby reserved and set apart as a public forest reservation all of said lands within the area shown as the Allegheny National Forest on the diagram attached hereto and made a part hereof, and that all lands, therein which have been or may hereafter by acquired by the United States for National Forest purposes shall be permanently reserved and administered as part of the Allegheny National Forest. In Witness, thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done in the City of Washington this twenty-fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord on thousand nine hundred and twenty-three, and of the independence of the United States the one hundred and forty-eighth. FORESTS ARE NOT FARMS Black Cherry is a fine tree but it made up only 0.8% of the native forest. Clearcutting, herbicides, and fertilizers have been used to farm for Black Cherry which now makes up more than 25% of the forest.

for "forest health". BLACK CHERRY DECLINE For 30 years the US Forest Service said they had to promote black cherry over other tree species because of health risks to those species. Black cherry only made up 0.8% of the native forest, but today makes up > 25% of the Allegheny. Now, black cherry is declining at faster rates than other tree species. 30 years of clearcutting hurt forest health. We don't need more clearcutting. AlleghenyForest.org

Colored National Recreation Areas Green to emphasize they are largely conserved. White areas represent state or private lands.

Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest is primarily managed for clearcutting (red) with secondary considerations for forest conservation (green). Unfortunately, the US Forest Service under Trump plans to clearcut some of those green areas as well (see Upper Mill Project)!

The Allegheny National Forest was established in 1923. President Coolidge had the choice of establishing the forest for timber production or watershed protection - he chose watershed protection.

Historically, Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest had less than 1% of black cherry in the overstory. Due to manipulative logging, herbicides, fertilizers, and fencing black cherry now makes up over 25% of the overstory and 50% of the understory.

Looking for other forest activists to connect with / follow. Worked for 15 years to protect Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest. Went dormant for a while after burnout and am riddled with chronic illness but needs must protect the forest!!

The Allegheny NF was established in 1923 for watershed protection. It’s time to restore that mission and demand that watershed protection, ecological nurturing, and public recreation be restored as the emphasis for forest management - and not the interests and greed of private timber corporations.

Over 30% of black cherry trees are dead or dying because of this manipulative management. Yet, the plan is to keep propagating black cherry over the needs of native wildlife and the ecosystems. We can do better.

The problem? The black cherry tree is a short lived, shallow rooted, thin canopied tree susceptible to acid rain. And for these and other reasons, black cherry is in rapid decline across the forest.

Why? Because the Allegheny National Forest is home to the commercially lucrative black cherry tree. Though this tree makes up less than 1% of the native forest, they manipulate things to propagate black cherry over other native trees. The result is black cherry now dominates the forest overstory.

A significant part of the project area is supposed to be managed for old growth habitat. But instead is being subject to extensive logging including 143 acres of clearcutting. The Kane Experimental Forest which is essential to old growth connectivity will be subjected to 258 acres of clearcutting.

Then in order to manipulate the ecosystem in favor of commercial trees they will fence, fertilize, and manually cut those 2,832 acres further. 16 of the clearcuts will exceed the standard clearcutting limit of 40 acres - with clearcuts averaging 124 acres in size and ranging up to 335 acres in size.
