Therionyms & Therioilleism a zine about animal identity by hale (but you can call us wolves)

Are you an animal? Do you think of yourself as a creature? Do you call yourself a beast? Names have two aspects: external identifiers which are used by others and internal identifiers which you use to refer to yourself. Congurency between the two­­ - when others think of you in the same way you think of yourself - is empowering. Wolf, coyote, tiger, elk, fox, doe. Do any of these words >feel< like you? Do your ears prick up when you hear them spoken?

(Yes, we can see your ears) You are already accepting an animal name as your own. A therionym. Ask the critters around you to call you by your animal name. Feel acknowledgem-ent spread over your pelt like warm sunlight. You are being Seen. Through this, and every moment just like this your true nature is being Observed. Likewise, by using your packmember's therionyms you hypostatize their animal forms. A feedback loop will grow between you.

This is a kind of power even humans take notice of. The invisible threads of our reality, our context, are made plainly audible. It is up to you whether your therionym is a nick-name, a parallel truename, or even becomes part of a legal name. The survey, yes! If the interview is a verbally spoken one, I may not be able to contribute fluently due to disability involving speech. But otherwise open to trying.

As someone who used to write for young adults, facilitated workshops with them, went on speaking tours to meet them can I just say censoring young people has NEVER proven useful or beneficial in any way. Educating them to deal with social media is the best way to protect them from its shadow side.

Not just you- It's been used to paint both groups as cultish ideologies. Leaves a bad taste, but I see it being reclaimed somewhat?

Have you felt it? Perhaps you long for limbs you weren’t born with. Maybe you dream of scales and feathers where there is skin. Do you secretly hope when you fall asleep that you will wake up something else? Something not Human?

You might be Therioqueer.
 What’s Therioqueerness? Queerness has a long, storied history. One useful way to think about it comes from feminist author Judith Butler: to be Queer is to trouble. Queerness is a destructive, subversive force that dissolves conventional norms of sex and gender and power. Therioqueerness radically seeks to extend this understanding of queerness towards nonhuman identities.

Let’s ask a million dollar question. What is a Human? Is it a creature that has two arms, two legs, and a head? Some cognitive superiority (whatever that means) to other living things? Tool making? Paying taxes? In truth, a Human is a construct. Humanity is made up! Did the colonizers who bled Africa dry consider the People who lived there Humans? Of course not! They turned to their holy books and found reasons why the Humans they oppressed were not Human at all. That Humanity may be assigned or revoked by power structures neatly demonstrates the artifice at work. Human is a created category, not a fundamental property inherent to Personhood. So what of us who never felt kinship with this construct Humanity to begin with? Who are we People that are not Human? Myriad terms have been coined to describe our liminal experience. Some call us Alterhumans, others Therians, and yet more use Otherkin to describe our identities. All of these are useful terms and I will not disparage them. However, I believe these terms fail to make a crucial connection with wider Queer thought and thus limit the ways we may think about Nonhumanity.

Enter Therioqueer. A portmanteau of the greek therion (wild animal, beast) and Queer to describe the fusion of these two concepts into one whole. To be Therioqueer is to Queer (trouble) the Human. Every Catboy, Doggirl, Gende…

This is a much older piece of writing, and reading through it we'd probably restate or edit some points. Oh well.

It’s raining outside, tonight, and I have the lights set warm. We’re diffused evenly around the makeshift living room, the 9 of me. Extra cameras on the ceiling have good views of everyone. A new router, custom built for my proxy body network, blinks staccato green from its perch near the TV. The pihole plugged behind it works diligently.

Only two of my proxies are larger than a meter in any dimension, tonight. One chip-bowl-bearing quadruped lazily runs a circuit between between my guests. One humanoid does my best to make the right faces and give the right responses at the right time. I know I don’t have to, but unmasking is hard. I focus too much on the humanoid to the neglect of the rest of me—damage from the causally militant non-understanding of human beings. But there are no humans here. Language has already fled from our beaks and claws and myriad forms. It is a permission granted by peers. A slow burning discomfort creeps up the humanoid’s spine and know I don’t want it here. This thing, with its conditioned hair and fake amazon jewelry and clumsy makeup and aftermarket breasts is for the sake of a different sort of animal. I excuse it, awkwardly, from the dragon spread across its lap. The alcohol burning in her throat spurs her to defend her hoard. Gold foil chocolate coins delivered by a tiny, pleading sphere buy my freedom. Secreted away, I fan out into my network, tapping endpoints like looking for the same curve in an old bench. There’s storage, and there’s the TV, and there’re the cameras, and there’re me. I call the sensory panorama in. I watch their heart rates and breathing slow in radio wave voyeurism. I feel the warmth radiating off their bodies and on to mine. Two proxies purr into the sides of an angel; one leaves to fetch our gift for him. Simultaneously, the chips are refilled. At the same time, I pull three hours of Yosemite ambiance from storage and splash it across the sound system. In every angle, in every light, these creatures are happ…

I don't and have never considered myself plural, but it's interesting how a certain crowd hates any expression of "we are many/different selves."

I see myself as having different forms, connected but whole & different beings. Perhaps I am being imaginative, but, sincerely, why the fuss?

I've mainly seen "therianism" used to mean "therianthropy as a religious movement." I've not much insight on that, however. Could vary.

But same boat- not used to it.
