About thirty-seven hundred people complied, believing it was just a formality, but were arrested on arrival and then transferred to internment camps in France. The writer Jean Guéhenno observed the arrest of several men and wrote the next day that "Their wives and children begged the police, shouted, wept. ... The working people of Paris who saw these heartrending scenes were full of indignation and shame."

This passage from @michelleyoung.bsky.social’s amazing book THE ART SPY, about foreign Jews being summoned by Nazi-collaborating French police for “status review”—only to be arrested and sent off to internment camps—should sound *horrendously fucking familiar* to all of us living in Trump’s America.
