Here's the thing: if someone asks you, "Have you read [book]??" And you reply "no" (because you listened to the audiobook), you're obviously being absurd. They were asking if you absorbed the book, not if your eyes scanned the pages. And that's how I know that audiobooks "count" as reading.

Like obviously you're not "reading" in the sense of using your eyes to parse words, but reading as we use it is to experience a story that's contained in a book. In that context (the context that is relevant to the conversation) audiobooks are absolutely reading

I was reading Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson in the dentist waiting room and my dentist saw as he called me in. He recommended me the Wheel of Time saying it was the pinnacle of fantasy books. 14 books later I have to agree with him lmao
