What 1990s Internet History Tells Us About the AI Boom In the 1990s, tech companies used utopian language to sell the internet. The AI industry is taking a different approach.

Check out this article in time magazine written by my colleague Kate Flach! She compares the rise of the internet in the 90s and the rise of AI today. Worth a read!

_ @biqbal.bsky.social’s deeply impressive book arrived friday. i’ve been learning from it. each sentence opens up a space to revise thinking, to revive the imagination, and to sense our ethical & political responsibility to each other, figured here as community, the planetary, and the divine

Great stuff from Joan Scott. So disappointing to see so many full and emeritus folks defend an organization that has: (1) failed to advocate for young scholars entering a collapsing profession; and (2) refused to take its members’ grievances and demands seriously—esp. on the issue of scholasticide.🗃️

Accurate, Current, and Relevant (Prophetic Maharaja Book Event) As I wrote Prophetic Maharaja, I often recalled that libraries cull their collections. This common practice is called ‘weeding,’ which, as the American Library Association has it, “is critical to collection maintenance and involves the removal of resources from the collection. All materials are considered for weeding based on accuracy, currency, and relevancy.” The task has become more onerous as budget cuts, the promise of the digital, limited space—the need for open student study spaces—and the overall destruction of the university further extends weeding.

Non-redemptive Narration (<i>Prophetic Maharaja</i> Book Event) 1. One of the things for which I have come to rely on Rajbir over the years is his unfailing attentiveness to the dynamics of loss: one that is unsentimental and non-indulgent. (Against the empire of trauma and the weaponization of victimhood, to say nothing of wounded attachments and left melancholia.) Of course, this is not to say that one can stand apart from loss, either; simply that the language of loss is ubiquitous: it does not make you special or confer some kind of election.
