You can also press up in the right control stick to get a slightly more tactical viewpoint.

That helps, but a huge part of it is also the pacing of the game. Since battles tend to be much longer, the time in between battles can also be much longer. This allows for the cutscenes to be longer and meatier, taking advantage of all those characters.
