Music... I want it to feel similar. And sometimes it does. If I am vibing well with a synth patch, I'll easily sit there for a while and noodle and that's so nice!

Other times I lose myself in the technical details of designing sounds or writing music πŸ˜…

I'm aiming to think less, play more haha

These are pretty! (This and the koi the other day)

Totally agree, simple activities that keep the hands busy are nice and restful.

For me, that's mindless abstract doodles. Knitting patterns that are intentionally simple and repetitive. Cross stitching as well.

3D stereo pair (cross-eyed) of a Stargazer Lily

This is clever, putting 3 photos side-by-side so you have both cross-eyed and parallel views available!

For my own stereophotography experiments, I made a widget on my website that can switch between viewing modes.

I edited several 3D stereo photos of plants I took this summer and early fall! To see it in 3D, cross your eyes so the red dots line up.

On my website, there are many more 3D photos, and you can switch between a few different 3D stereogram formats.

Abstract tangle and diagrams breaking down the structure. My doodles often work like this - patterns nested inside patterns.

ooh that's a cool way to slice it!

Also the dark edges make it look kinda like slices of smoked cheese

I once had a Hypnograph (fancy drawing machine with gears, reminiscent of a spirograph). I couldn't use fountain pens with it since the pen holder was always vertical.

How easy is it to set up pen plotters with fountain pens?

E.g. if the pen isn't mounted right, would the plotter bash it into the paper and damage the nib?

And I guess you also need to dial in the angle of the pen to get the ink to flow consistently?

Also I'm impressed by the effort this kind of pattern takes. So much color switching!

Pretty! How does the algorithm work? Are you generating regions of solid color then dithering using colors from neighbors? Overlaying non-uniform noise patterns? Something else?

Here's a chart for the pattern. I kept it very simple, kinda like a checkerboard but with rectangles of different sizes.

The stripes were from the variegated purple yarn I used.

Furnace - the chiptune tracker

I was curious too, looking at the titlebar of the program, it looks like the tracker is called Furnace

tildearrow.org/furnace/ -- This looks exciting, it seems to support many different sound chips

Yeah, it does take some effort. Perhaps a Cricut or laser cutter could do better, depending on the material?

For your wooden models, how did you cut those out?

Squeezing a Sliceform Sculpture

I dug deeper into the math of squashing a sliceform sculpture flat. I made this interactive Desmos graph to illustrate how it works!

No matter where you hold the shape, it stretches along one grid diagonal, and shrinks along the other!

Ah, found it! I used this colored cardstock. I printed the slice shapes on it, then cut them out with scissors + a hobby knife for the slits.

Finally a fun math book about these shapes. Need to give it another read. It had a lot of cool ideas for math art, but I never put them to use.

I found this fidget toy version in a mall kiosk.

One thing I realized from this is that the shape deformation must be a 2D linear transformation since it's mapping parallel planes to parallel planes.

same thing with scissor lifts, I think

Ooh I love sliceform sculptures like this! Found this one I made way back in 2019.

I had found these tabletop sign holders at the Resource Exchange in Philly. I realized they would be perfect for turning my trading card sized art into standees of sorts!

Generalizing "for" Lists and Intervals In Desmos, you can use β€˜for’ to plot points or evaluate a variable for multiple values using a list or to graph a continuous curve with finite or infinite intervals. This feature allows you to gene...

I was going to ask about iterating over multiple lists like a grid, but TIL that this feature exists already!!?!? Wonderful!

I've been wanting this feature for years! I've been using a long 1D list + floor()/mod() as a workaround.

This is my attempt to find a similar bite-sized musical work I can make in one sitting.

I want to make music more often; keeping the format simple will help me get there.

For context, trading card-sized art is an important format for me. I really like it because it keeps each work small and self-contained. This imposes a creative constraint and allows me to explore many different ideas quickly.
