Why I Won't Write on Substack There is something perverse about every voice of record, every journalist with a profile, every writer with an audience abandoning ship for Substack. It's been a growing trend for the past few years, and it's getting worse. Substack has done an excellent job convincing intelligent people from legacy media backgrounds

No platform is ever truly free.

That applies whether we’re talking about TikTok, Google, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook - or Substack. And if you think to yourself, this time, it'll be different, good luck to you.

But sooner or later, you're going to get fucked.

Nothing Is Impossible (If You Know How to Start): On First Steps and False Barriers
YouTube video by JA Westenberg Nothing Is Impossible (If You Know How to Start): On First Steps and False Barriers

Felt powerless-needed to hear this: "The real value of the first step isn't in its specific direction. It's in breaking the paralysis of possibility." "Movement creates information. Standing still creates nothing." "There's value in a shitty First Step."β€”JA Westenberg www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB8U...

Okay, to help everyone make their BlueSky what they want it to be, here's a thread about feeds. What they are, how to find them, how to add them, how to pin them, what feeds to follow if you're a #writer, and how you can make your own

The new journal my grad students and I are creating has gotten a flood of poetry and fiction submissions (yay!), but the editors are especially hoping for more open genre (hybrid, multimedia) and nonfiction pieces too! Send them some good longform work!

"Snowdrops" by Louise GlΓΌck

Do you know what I was, how I lived? You know
what despair is; then
winter should have meaning for you.

I did not expect to survive,
earth suppressing me. I didn't expect
to waken again, to feel
in damp earth my body
able to respond again, remembering
after so long how to open again
in the cold light
of earliest springβ€”

afraid, yes, but among you again
crying yes risk joy

in the raw wind of the new world.
