09.11.2025 17:35 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yeah $174K (Congress) is not *bad* pay (it's ~top 10% of US), but it's not "we recruit from the most talented 10k people in US". I'm not sure we want to be paying tens of millions of dollars a year, but "random software engineers, lawyers, etc are making more by the time they're age eligible" is bad
08.11.2025 17:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm convinced part of why people get phished is real companies routinely do sketchy stuff too. (There was an account with zero balance and a matching credit balance refund, so I think it was real.)
24.10.2025 01:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A few months ago Chase refunded a credit balance to me, so they sent me an email saying within a few days I needed to go to cnc.jpmorgan.com. which wanted a bank account number. No secure message, no in-app alert, no account with a matching balance.
24.10.2025 01:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0(actually, maybe "no parents" is age discrimination? Idk. I sorta assume if you ask a lawyer if you can discriminate based on caregiving they'll say "it's not a good idea legally" and if you ask "but is it legal" they'll sigh and ask if they really need to get into the details and practicalities)
23.10.2025 17:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(skimming www.eeoc.gov/questions-an... it also kinda sounds like at least federally it's legal to say "we don't hire people with kids", as long as you don't hire mothers *or* fathers, but since basically everyone discriminates more against mothers than fathers this doesn't come up much)
23.10.2025 17:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0IANAL but my understanding is that basically no questions are illegal to *ask* per se, but since it's illegal to *discriminate* based on the answers, companies tend to really discourage asking them. (Asking them is strong circumstantial evidence you were discriminating based on the answers)
23.10.2025 17:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Question: What does M.T.A. stand for? Four choices, including Metropolitan Transportation Authority
A correction notice mentioning than Manhattan is partially on the mainland
They fixed it, but didn't deem it worth a correction notice.
07.10.2025 21:08 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's from a zombie series (Newsflesh) by McGuire writing as Mira Grant. KA (zombie virus) came from a broad spectrum cold cure. I think the novella Countdown has the background. www.reddit.com/r/zombies/s/... has a bit
04.10.2025 18:48 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've only visited, but I really enjoyed wandering around Peaks Island (there's a ferry) and ice cream at Gelato Fiasco

13.09.2025 00:15 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Any idea why there's so many sick leave bank bills? I wouldn't have expected specific people's sick leave to involve legislative action.
11.09.2025 20:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It feels like they're deciding to go from a big fish in a small pond to a small fish in a big pond, and I'm really not convinced that'll go well for them.
Seems like they used to have a bunch of unique bits (seating, bags, etc) and they were the only choice for people who liked that, and now... No
I enjoy that Reddit seems to have moved on from posting actual photos to, like, paintings of Dante's Inferno.
02.09.2025 23:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Probably the Discworld quote I think about / reference most. (The wiki is helpful.)

01.09.2025 19:32 β π 4003 π 1349 π¬ 17 π 22Has this project been frozen for basically exactly our current mayor's time in office? Hmm.
29.08.2025 02:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0How comparable are the numbers across modes? There's significant overlap numerically across the four graphs. (I've never really understood the distinction between those three kinds of rail...)
23.08.2025 21:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0So I could believe there may also be some elements of sales (cold emails) and marketing (... brainstorming?) actually being a better fit than tech jobs. (And if you're engaging somehow, skipping other areas might be fine)
(Probably no small part tech workers understanding the limits better though)
Sure, the AI will hallucinate some content, but you were going to horribly misread some prospects' websites anyway.
In jobs where you really care about a low error rate (true of a bunch of tech jobs), K-selection is a bit closer and AI might be a worse fit.
Yeah....
I was also musing a few days ago that there may be some similarity with AI replacement to r/K-selection (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R/K_sel...). In a sales job where you're firing off 20 cold emails a day & not worrying about writing good ones, an AI probably *can* write better emails faster.
I had internalized "everything is legal in the local part per spec, it's all up to the server", and apparently that's a lot less true than I thought.
18.08.2025 03:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You don't need reputation to receive!
Really that fact is a solid summary of why running a receive-only server is fine, and handling sending is a huge pain. (Technically the server I run can send, and I think it even works, but I don't use it for that usually)
AIUI itch uses Stripe and PayPal for payment processing. Do payment processors prohibit routing based on risk, but are fine with multiple processors and routing based on payment method? (I guess the end user picks the processor in this case, possibly with some selection by the game dev?)
16.08.2025 05:13 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'm confused by "reflects a strategic realignment". They're the "automotive credit corporation" - what are they realigning to that's not making loans? (Maybe this is solidly temporary? They implied more that it may be temporary in the letter)
11.08.2025 16:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If their cost of capital, maintenance costs, etc are really different from other buyers (as owner-occupiers or landlords), that could shift things, admittedly (since their equilibrium wouldn't be some other buyer's). Dunno that we should expect that though.
11.08.2025 03:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Presumably they should only buy if buying is cheaper than renting, since they want to make a profit from buying the houses and renting them out. I'm not sure it should shift the equilibrium point so much as make the market return to the equilibrium faster.
11.08.2025 03:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think they mostly won't tell you how they judge, so it's also hard to check if they're really doing the classification you want.
08.08.2025 18:51 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah, my impression is that there have been a bunch of attempts to train AIs at image classification, and it often looks good and then turns out to be judging based on something useless - x-ray machine type, whether your dog/wolf is in snow, etc..
