Yeah $174K (Congress) is not *bad* pay (it's ~top 10% of US), but it's not "we recruit from the most talented 10k people in US". I'm convinced part of why people get phished is real companies routinely do sketchy stuff too. (There was an account with zero balance and a matching credit balance refund, so I think it was real.)

A few months ago Chase refunded a credit balance to me, so they sent me an email saying within a few days I needed to go to cnc.jpmorgan.com. which wanted a bank account number. No secure message, no in-app alert, no account with a matching balance.

(actually, maybe "no parents" is age discrimination? Idk. I sorta assume if you ask a lawyer if you can discriminate based on caregiving they'll say "it's not a good idea legally" and if you ask "but is it legal" they'll sigh and ask if they really need to get into the details and practicalities)

IANAL but my understanding is that basically no questions are illegal to *ask* per se, but since it's illegal to *discriminate* based on the answers, companies tend to really discourage asking them. (Asking them is strong circumstantial evidence you were discriminating based on the answers)

In jobs where you really care about a low error rate (true of a bunch of tech jobs), K-selection is a bit closer and AI might be a worse fit.

I was also musing a few days ago that there may be some similarity with AI replacement to r/K-selection (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/R/K_sel...). In a sales job where you're firing off 20 cold emails a day & not worrying about writing good ones, an AI probably *can* write better emails faster.

I had internalized "everything is legal in the local part per spec, it's all up to the server", and apparently that's a lot less true than I thought.

Really that fact is a solid summary of why running a receive-only server is fine, and handling sending is a huge pain. (Technically the server I run can send, and I think it even works, but I don't use it for that usually)

AIUI itch uses Stripe and PayPal for payment processing. Do payment processors prohibit routing based on risk, but are fine with multiple processors and routing based on payment method? (I guess the end user picks the processor in this case, possibly with some selection by the game dev?)

If their cost of capital, maintenance costs, etc are really different from other buyers (as owner-occupiers or landlords), that could shift things, admittedly (since their equilibrium wouldn't be some other buyer's). Dunno that we should expect that though.

Presumably they should only buy if buying is cheaper than renting, since they want to make a profit from buying the houses and renting them out. I'm not sure it should shift the equilibrium point so much as make the market return to the equilibrium faster.

I think they mostly won't tell you how they judge, so it's also hard to check if they're really doing the classification you want.

Yeah, my impression is that there have been a bunch of attempts to train AIs at image classification, and it often looks good and then turns out to be judging based on something useless - x-ray machine type, whether your dog/wolf is in snow, etc..
