Letter: 'Parliament should bring back the Climate & Nature Bill'
Protecting the local environment and tackling the climate crisis were among my main motivations for getting into politics.
π£ @dannychambers.bsky.social: βThe Climate & Nature Bill would've made the UK a world leader in tackling both the climate and nature crises with a joined-up plan that listened to scientists and turned their recommendations into action. I hope the Government brings the #CANBill back to the Commons."

Biodiversity collapse threatens UK security, intelligence chiefs warn
Ecosystem destruction will increase food shortages, disorder and mass migration, with effects already being felt
You mayβve seen coverage of a new report on the threat to national security from environmental collapse.
A common response thatβs got my goat is: βLook, itβs not just tree-hugging enviros saying this, itβs hard-nosed spooks!β
A short thread on why this framing is bad history & bad politicsπ§΅π‘π
24.01.2026 04:42 β π 266 π 170 π¬ 10 π 11
2/ Two things annoy me about this.
First: it misrepresents environmentalism.
That line implies environmentalists have been motivated by sentiment, aesthetics, or vibes, trees over people, & that concern for human welfare only enters the picture once security services weigh in.
Thatβs simply false
24.01.2026 04:42 β π 102 π 18 π¬ 1 π 1
3/ From the birth of the modern environmental movement, leading thinkers have been explicit about this:
Environmental harm threatens human health, social stability, economic life, and collective survival.
This has never been a side-issue or an afterthought. Itβs been the core argument.
24.01.2026 04:43 β π 114 π 25 π¬ 1 π 2
4/ Environmental warnings were always about people:
about poisoned bodies, fragile food systems, collapsing livelihoods, conflict, displacement, and social breakdown.
Recasting them as unserious until validated by βgrown-upsβ in the security state erases that history and cheapens the argument
24.01.2026 04:45 β π 113 π 25 π¬ 1 π 1
5/ Just a few examples from early modern environmental thought, making this case plainly and repeatedly:
β Barry Commoner
β Rachel Carson
β Frank Fraser Darling
Different voices, same message: ecological damage is a direct threat to human societies.
This was not subtle.
24.01.2026 04:46 β π 84 π 13 π¬ 1 π 0
6/ Second annoyance: the false sense of novelty.
Yes, security services are warning about ecological and climate risks.
But this report is not saying anything new.
Security analysts and military thinkers have been flagging these dangers for years - even decades!
24.01.2026 04:48 β π 84 π 15 π¬ 4 π 1
7/ Theyβve warned about:
β climate-driven migration
β state fragility
β conflict risks
β pressure on food, water, and infrastructure
β cascading systemic shocks
In other words: the same risks environmentalists and scientists have been pointing to, in different language.
24.01.2026 04:48 β π 82 π 15 π¬ 1 π 0
9/ Which brings us to the real lesson, and the part that tends to get quietly skipped.
Policy-makers didnβt ignore environmentalists because they were naive or soft.
They didnβt ignore security and military analysts because they were idealists.
They ignored both.
24.01.2026 04:57 β π 87 π 23 π¬ 2 π 1
10/ Politicians igored them because warnings alone do not compel action in the face of organised vested interests.
Fossil capital.
Extractive industries.
Short-term political incentives.
Institutional inertia.
These were always the real obstacles, not a lack of credibility.
24.01.2026 04:57 β π 122 π 40 π¬ 1 π 2
11/ Treating this report as a turning point doesnβt just misunderstand history
It lets power off the hook by implying the problem was *who* was speaking, rather than what interests were being protected
Weβve had warnings, from scientists, environmentalists, & security analysts for a long time!

Parliamentary call for a televised emergency briefing
For MPs and Peers to express support for briefing the nation on the threats from climate & nature breakdown to the UKβs security, food supply, health and economy.
Very concerning. The UK Government should respond by briefing the nation on the threats posed by climate breakdown and nature collapse - and the opportunities from acting.
MPs please add your name to the Parliamentary Call for a televised emergency briefing.

Cover page of UK Government document titled "Global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security: A national security assessment." Features the HM Government crest and an abstract design of overlapping coloured circles in pink, orange, green, blue and muted tones. Marked "UK OFFICIAL".
The UK Government just released its national security assessment on #biodiversity loss: an actual intelligence assessment using the same frameworks as military threat analysis. The conclusion? #Nature is a foundation of national security and every critical #ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse. π§΅

This is why the #CANBill matters. It offers an integrated framework, treating #climate and #nature as the linked crises they areβwith accountability mechanisms across government. The @zero-hour.bsky.social alliance has been building support since 2020. Now there's an even stronger case for the Bill.
20.01.2026 19:27 β π 11 π 6 π¬ 1 π 1
You might expect our legislative framework to reflect this: it doesn't.
Sch. 17 of the Environment Act (meant to tackle #deforestation in supply chains) still isn't implemented. Financial institutions remain outside scope. The gap between threat assessment and Ministers' policy responses is glaring.
20.01.2026 19:27 β π 7 π 3 π¬ 1 π 0
The assessment links #ecosystem collapse to cascading security risks: migration, conflict, pandemics, economic instability, geopolitical competition for resources. It also flags UK #food system vulnerabilities: we import 40% of what we eat, and we can't achieve self-sufficiency at current diets.
