This is the other part of the Rascal issue. Reporting that unethical doesn't just harm Jay and co. It also harms the freelancers the piece is about. Nobody wins here, at all. Not the contractors, not the companies, not Rascal, and not a now less-informed public.

I think it's not unreasonable to expect even a small outlet that prides itself on labor reporting specifically to know the difference between getting a royalty payment and having ownership of the IP.

There's parts of the article I didn't talk about, like the contractors' complaints about bad communication while working on the project. Those are still valid, but subjective enough that you can't say Rascal did a bad job in reporting.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the royalties would still apply if they reprinted, which both sides agreed on. The negotiation was about buying future royalties out with a flat payment.

I don't blame them for aiming high, or for turning down an offer they didn't like, even if that offer is reasonable compared to the rest of the industry.

I do blame anyone who's in a position to know better who didn't point that out, including the writers of that Rascal article.

The impression I get is that the writers they cite in the article may have had an inaccurate impression of what their contracts meant, and definitely an inaccurate one of what kind of financial scale RPG publishing acts on. That's understandable.

Despite repeating several times in their two hour long podcast episode about it that the contractors had an equity stake in the project, the writer admitted in a subscriber-only discord channel that he meant they "symbolically" had equity and that no equity was included in the contracts he reviewed.

Hi! As Jay's co-creator — while also being a fellow *contractor* at PCG, not associated with any of the business decisions being made — I think this summary of events laid out by Xeni is accurate to what I remember of the unfolding distribution problems that kept Yazeba's off of shelves.

I'm so hyped for this. It looks insane in all the right ways.
