โGood afternoon. My name is [redacted] and my wife and I have been at OMDC since April 15 2025,โ reads a handwritten note, wrapped around a lotion bottle that was thrown by a man held captive inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center (OMDC) on Sunday. โItโs cold here all the time and the food is poor,โ the missive continues. โFor 280 days we havenโt eaten a single piece of fruit, banana, apple, orange, or anything fresh. We are all in one big room with no doors or windows. We canโt see any grass or trees. We are all constantly sick.โ

Ossoff: We were told that MAGA was for working-class Americans. But this is a government of, by, and for the ultra-rich. Itโs the wealthiest Cabinet ever. This is the Epstein class. They are the elites they pretend to hate.

Letโs walk back to where we started. What motivates Trump? The answer is simple: racism. You might also say ego and raw self-interest, but the two are connected. Racism, among other things, is a kind of chauvinism, a belief in oneโs inherent superiority, based on nothing other than a meaningless accident of birth. Itโs an ideology that papers over feelings of inadequacy, that tells you that โ no matter what you have or have not accomplished in your life โ youโre still better than someone, some group. Letโs suppose youโre the spoiled son of a self-made man. Letโs suppose that, despite your flash and bravado, youโve failed at virtually everything youโve tried. Youโre the laughingstock of polite society, a punchline for the privileged. You think youโre superior enough to be the president of the United States โ the highest honor in your country โ but the actual president is a man of humble origins, a minority of the kind your family didnโt even rent to when you were in the landlord business. And he is claiming power that rightfully belongs to you. Heโs even mocking you, ridiculing you for all the world to see. For years, a cottage industry of political observers has contorted itself to obscure and occlude the obvious. That regardless of what others see in him, Trumpโs entire political career โ from his embrace of birtherism to his hatred of birthright citizenship โ cannot be understood outside the context of his bitter, deep-seated racism.

Democracy dies in oligarchy.
Redistricting did not turn out how Trump wanted. So, now he is resorting to political prosecutions, ballot seizures and the threat of federal paramilitary to steal the 2026 midterms. He is normalizing the idea that his administration will take over ballot counting. We cannot let that happen.
