This should create a fresh shapekey with the correct deformation, and I believe it will be set relative to basis by default.

I can relate: dipping my toes into vfxedit was very scary at first, but once you get into it its not so bad! (I was also motivated by the need to have my fav mounts ridden sidesaddle- it's so much better for skirts!)
