The details differ but the “jealous Lex” vibe is right out of Morrison’s All-Star Superman.

All of these except the Lrypton plot beat are straight out of early Superman. Jimmy has been a sex magnet even across species since the 1960s. In the 1940s, Clark regularly used superpowers to beat Lois to a scoop.

The Krypton-as-conquerors vibe was introduced by John Byrne’s 1990s run.

The TLDR is: what is striking about the past few years of LLMs (and other "dataset plus gradient descent" technologies) isn't their existence, or their accuracy, but the recent *rate of change* of improvement.

Like all technological progress, we've had machines that we labeled (rightly or wrongly) as intelligent since the Mechanical Turk and probably before. Pretending that there hasn't been an inflection point in the nature and quality of the results in the past few years is just childish.

I think it's legitimately intriguing and says something about human psychology that a certain percentage of the population responds to these (actually impressive) datasets-plus-gradient-descent machines with "I'm going to write my own version of A New Kind Of Science".

Hi, engineer here. We had machines for thousands of years, boolean logic for hundreds, and transitors for about 75 years before someone managed to get machines to respond like this with this level of agility. Even though it's "just math" it's perfectly appropriate to be impressed by it.
