My local kebab shop considers me a hero and gives me free food. Apparently, they were getting robbed one night and I stopped it by talking the robber out of it. But I have no recollection of this because I was almost on the verge of being paralytically drunk. Still, free food.

”Ei kukaan hullu siitä hyökkää” – Biologi suunnitteli itärajalle upottavan panssariesteen Biologi Risto Sulkava ehdottaa ennallistettavaksi 50 ojitettua suoaluetta itärajalta. Ne toimisivat panssariesteinä ja hiilinieluina.

Erinomainen idea.

Hungary plans anti-Ukraine bloc with Czechia, Slovakia Budapest wants to boost its political alliances in Brussels, Viktor Orbán’s political director says.

Ukrainan eloonjäämistaistelu on myrkkyä Orbanille. Ukrainan voitto sodassa veisi pohjan hänen koko narratiiviltaan, että pienet maat voivat selviytyä vain luopumalla suvereniteetistaan. Siksi Ukrainaa vastaan taistelu on hänelle elintärkeää.

Clean white WHN slide. Large heading: “Why this matters.” Paragraph: “Throughout the pandemic, confusion over mask types led to unsafe guidance for both the public and healthcare workers. Even today, many hospitals still rely on surgical masks for ‘protection’ — when in fact, they are not PPE at all.”
Subheading: “Experts are setting the record straight.” Bulleted list:
• British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS): It’s a breach of health and safety law to claim surgical masks protect against inhaled hazards.
• Canadian Standards Association (CSA): Only respirators (N95, KN95, FFP2, etc.) qualify as PPE.
• FDA & CDC: Medical masks are for source control — not personal protection.

Medical masks were never designed to protect the wearer — and leading safety authorities are finally saying so. Only respirators (like N95s) qualify as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Read more: whn.global/whn-joins-in....

I've grown to think psychological network analysis is/was a huge distraction putting new methods on an old paradigm. In truly complex systems, there is no stable linear material causality apart from the largest scale, and pretty much the best you can do is describe dynamics, intervene, adjust.

It's an theoretical-ontological position based on what we know about other fields. As such, "evidence for attractors" sounds very strange to me. Do we have evidence of functioning psychological systems NOT being able to depict multistability?

For another "why" that I can think of, would we not want to know about qualitatively different groups that may respond to interventions differently, e.g. here? www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

E.g. say in pic more is better: if we want people in A to move to E, it might make sense as an intervention strategy to go A->C->D->E instead of attempting to go A->E 🤔

This might be naive but I'm thinking in terms of a multidimensional state space, where attractors may exist (i.e. not every position is necessarily equally "habitable"). Some areas of the state space could be accessed more easily from particular areas, reflecting Kauffman's adjacent possibles

I would like to understand the criticism better, as I recently heard a prof ask "When is cluster analysis ever a good idea?"

Wouldn't we want to model the heterogeneity in the data?

In my research, I need long within-individual time-series. So I'd like to see "number of individuals with > n observations", where n is something like 100, 250, 500... or all of the above. But that's just me!

This is pretty great! But what do you mean by "time points" e.g. here? Based on the figure in paper, I'm guessing it's the maximum number of time points any individual has, which I wouldn't guess from the label "time points"...

What has changed is simple: people are scared of crossing Trump this time. In researching this piece, I interviewed dozens of figures, including lawmakers, private sector executives, retired senior military figures and intelligence chiefs, current and former Trump officials, Washington lawyers and foreign government officials. Such is the fear of jail, bankruptcy or professional reprisal, that most of these people insisted on anonymity. This was in spite of the fact that many of the same people also wanted to emphasise that Trump would only be restrained by powerful voices opposing him publicly. At times, it has felt like trying to report on politics in Turkey or Hungary.

We've worked with Richard Ryan, who's a relatively well-read person (although I tried and failed to force falsification criteria out of him). He's not a young guy, and I fear the over-simplified work will only proliferate after his passing. Maybe I'm unaware of the more sophisticated torch-carriers.

... But I think the ecological foundations of the six "mini-theories" underlying Self-Determination Theory are way more reasonable than many alternatives, drawing from e.g. Varela and Maturana. The mainstream empirical stuff I'm more wary of, given everything we know about the world of psychology.
