High-throughput screening reveals diverse lambdoid prophage inducers Prophages; dormant bacteriophage genomes integrated within the bacterial chromosome, play pivotal roles in shaping microbial communities when awakened. Our current understanding of prophage activation...

Prophage induction - nice study, inducers other than MitC, but also that inducer concentration matters. Search for optimum needed to get highest titers ☝️

A TEM image of a bacteriophage with a burst head and a broken tail tube

Screening some mutant phages and can’t help but feel bad about this guy who:

1. Had his head burst (Red selection is where the head was supposed to be)
2. Tail tube broke in half

RIP unnamed phage. You will be missed.

Pretty curious about the phage diversity here though.

‘Silly and pompous’: Official new names for viruses rile up researchers An overhaul of viruses’ scientific naming system has incensed some virologists, but others are more accepting

I can't see these names being adopted in the short to medium term. I certainly won't be insisting on their use.

Just keep in mind that creation of new names doesn't formally ban old ones. So whatever facilitates clearest communication is best.

You know you have a big dog when the bandana you got him from UK marked specifically for “large adult dogs” looks like this.

Time to bust out the ol’ towel and make a bandana out of it.
