I’ve been toying with the idea of D&D character commission for some time. Knocking around ideas, stylistic choices, logistics, etc. thought I’d share a quick test piece. It’s only one piece but I have more in the works.

I have a collection of cookbooks from the 1950s and ‘60s. Tons of amazing mid-century illustration!
I’m working on a piece for a project put together by the team at @painted.words and couldn’t resist trying my hand at the look of that era.

I have a hard time resisting the urge to experiment. I've done vector work, watercolor, highly rendered pieces, and more simplified, abstract work.
These three pieces are character designs I did for some D&D players. I developed this style over time and might revisit it again someday. #dnd

This book is essential reading right about now.

A boy and girl in a kitchen. She is preparing to pour drinks into glasses held by the boy. They’re both looking at a table filled with food and a giant, lopsided birthday cake.

A witch stands in the door of her cottage watching gremlin workers make changes to the home. She is renovating her home to be covered with candy.

A witch stomps away from a locked ramshackle shed. Someone is shaking their fist at her through the shed’s grated window.

A witch and two children riding her broom in silhouette against a giant moon. They are doing a loop-the-loop over a stream which leads into a distant collection of trees.

Several more piece completed some time ago. The first piece was completed as sample work for a client project sadly cancelled. The remaining three are from a retelling of Hansel and Gretel from the witch’s POV. #kidlitart

I was inspired after reading Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. More of a vibe than a literal interpretation. The girl is based on the earphone bicycle kid from E.T. The Extraterrestrial.
